The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes on the bereavement list and recalled right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Barnes, 26, appeared in each of Boston's first two games of the 2017 season, allowing only one hit in 1.2 scoreless innings. In 2016, the right-hander led the Red Sox with 62 appearances and 66.2 relief innings pitched in his first full major league season. Selected by Boston in the first round (19th overall) of the 2011 June Draft, Barnes is 7-7 with one save, a 4.49 ERA (60 ER/120.1 IP), and 120 strikeouts in 101 major league outings, including two starts.

Ramirez, 27, is in his sixth professional season since being selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2011 June Draft. He made his first Opening Day roster in 2016 and appeared in 14 games over eight stints with the big league club, but he spent a majority of the season with the PawSox. The right-hander has posted a 2.28 ERA (58 ER/229.0 IP) over his last four seasons at the minor league level since becoming a full-time reliever in 2013.
