BALTIMORE -- The Red Sox placed outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. on the paternity list Tuesday and recalled outfielder Rusney Castillo to fill Bradley's roster spot for Tuesday night's game against the Orioles.
Bradley returned to Boston on Tuesday to be with his wife, Erin, who is expecting the couple's first child. Manager John Farrell said that Bradley's absence comes earlier than expected.
"It is by a couple of weeks," Farrell said. "Hopefully everyone is getting through this OK and resting comfortably."
The Red Sox expect to be without Bradley for the next three games in Baltimore, but could have him back Friday for the start of a three-game series against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

"It's three days," Farrell said of MLB's paternity leave policy, "but there have been situations if there are any complexities or complications -- we're hopeful that's not the case -- but there's a possibility that it could extend."
Chris Young started in center in place of Bradley. Farrell said he did not want to shift Mookie Betts from right field.
Castillo, who began the season with the Red Sox before being optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on April 15, will be available off the bench. The 28-year-old was hitting .241 with eight doubles, one home run and 13 RBIs in 37 Triple-A games.
"There's been some inconsistencies on the offensive side of things," Farrell said. "I don't that he's gotten on track as we've seen in the past, so we'll see when he gets here."
Bradley, who had his 29-game hitting streak snapped last week, had started 50 of Boston's 51 games, hitting .331/.409/.601.
