Reds place Lorenzen on bereavement list

Adleman, who was called up from Triple-A, could fill in as reliever or start Friday

CINCINNATI -- The Reds placed reliever on the bereavement list Tuesday for what was termed a "family medical emergency" by manager Bryan Price.
"I don't know how long it'll be," Price said. "Hopefully everything gets better in a hurry. But if not, we'll weather the storm without him."
Lorenzen, 24, has a 2.30 ERA in 18 relief appearances for Cincinnati this season, including a 0.57 ERA over his last 10 appearances. He threw one scoreless inning during Monday's 6-3 loss to the Marlins.
Pitcher was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to replace Lorenzen on the 25-man roster. His promotion actually serves multiple purposes. Adleman has been tapped to start on Friday vs. the Dodgers in the rotation vacancy created when was optioned to Louisville on Monday. But Adleman will be available as a long reliever ahead of Friday because Cincinnati is shorthanded.
If Adleman is used in relief, would likely get the start on Friday. Sampson replaced Reed in the second inning on Sunday at Milwaukee and threw five innings.

"Adleman gives us length," Price said. "With all the rain that's in the forecast in the next several days ... should there be a stoppage in play for a period of time which would require us to remove the starter, he gives us that type of depth until Keyvius is back and ready to take on a workload. I hope not to use him. I'd like to see him on the mound Friday starting against L.A. If we need him, then I'll use him."
Adleman, 28, is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in four starts for the Reds this season, all in May before he went on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. He is 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA in 10 starts at Louisville, including 14 scoreless innings over his last two starts.

The Reds chose to go with Adleman as Reed's replacement rather than summoning a prospect like , who has been prone to walks in many of his recent starts.
"I liked the way he was pitching before he got hurt. I think that goes a long way with me," Price said of Adleman. "He's our next best. You can look at guys we call 'our prospects' or 'our heralded prospects,' but … you have to perform beyond your prospect status. You can be a prospect, but you still have to perform. We stay on top of what's going down in our system and who is performing well. It's nice to reward guys who are performing the best. It really is."
