Mike Trout was a central figure in two rallies, as well as Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who had two hits in his final All-Star Game on July 15, 2014, at Target Field in Minneapolis, to lead the American League to a 5-3 victory in the 85th All-Star Game.
The Angels' Trout had a double and a triple in three at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored to earn the Most Valuable Player Award.
Jeter was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
The AL jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against National League starter Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jeter opened the bottom of the first with a double to right and scored on Trout's triple to center. After Wainwright struck out Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano, Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer to make it 3-0.
The NL, however, battled back to tie the game 3-3 behind two doubles by Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy.
The Senior Circuit scored twice in the top of the second against Boston's Jon Lester after Seattle's Felix Hernandez struck out two in a scoreless first.
Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez started the second-inning rally with a one-out single and scored on a double to center by Chase Utley. The Philadelphia second baseman scored on Lucroy's double to left.
The NL pulled even in the fourth against Chris Sale of the White Sox, who hit Utley with a pitch with two out. Dee Gordon of the Los Angeles Dodgers ran for Utley and scored on Lucroy's double.
The AL broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out, current Padres catcher Derek Norris of Oakland and shortstop Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox hit back-to-back singles off the Cardinals' Pat Neshek. Norris scored the tie-breaking run on Trout's double. Washington's Tyler Clippard replaced Neshek and gave up a sacrifice fly to Houston second baseman Jose Altuve.
Neither team scored the rest of the game.
Jeter and Trout combined for four of the AL's seven hits, while Trout and Cabrera each had two RBIs. Lucroy and Ramirez each had two of the NL's eight hits. Lucroy had two RBIs.
Detroit's Max Scherzer allowed a hit with two strikeouts in an inning and was credited with the win. Glen Perkins of the host Twins struck out one in a perfect ninth to get credited for the save. Neshek suffered the loss.
The Padres were represented by starting pitcher Tyson Ross and closer Huston Street in the All-Star Game. Neither appeared in the game.
Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A's won the Home Run Derby on the eve of the All-Star Game for the second straight season.
