Rox make Mets feel the Raburn, sweep series

May 15th, 2016

DENVER -- Call him "Mr. Nyet." Ryan Raburn continued his assault on the Mets' pitching staff with a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh as the Rockies secured a three-game sweep Sunday at Coors Field with a 4-3 win.
"I'm always on the fastball, but of course 2-0, I wasn't trying to pull it by any means, in case he throws a slider or something like that," Raburn said. "He left one over the plate, and I was able to put the barrel on it and come through."
It was Raburn's ninth hit in 16 at-bats against the Mets for a .563 average, and it was his second pinch-hit homer and sixth of his career. Raburn's go-ahead drive came off reliever Jim Henderson in the first at-bat after Mets starter Jacob deGrom left the game with a 3-2 lead after 6 1/3 effective and efficient innings.

The Mets jumped out to an early lead when Yoenis Cespedes opened the second inning with a towering 433-foot homer into the Rockies bullpen. They added a pair in the third thanks to deGrom's first hit of the year, a single up the middle that plated Eric Campbell, who had doubled to lead off the inning. deGrom came home on Asdrubal Cabrera's single to put New York ahead, 3-1.
Carlos Gonzalez was at the heart of the Rockies' damage, driving a one-out double past a charging Michael Conforto in left field in the second inning and scoring on DJ LeMahieu's single to right. Gonzalez then launched a deGrom offering into the center-field seats for a two-out solo shot in the sixth to bring Colorado within one run.

Jake McGee pitched the ninth, getting pinch-hitter David Wright to ground out with the tying run on base for his 12th save of the season.
Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood held the Mets to three runs on six hits over seven innings to earn his fifth win. The Rockies are on a four-game win streak -- their longest of the season. They sit at .514, improving their home record to 8-10 as they start a nine-game road trip, where they are 11-8.
"I think the resiliency of this club is great," Raburn said. "Now we go on the road and hopefully we continue to do what we've been doing on the road. Just try to win ballgames and see where it takes us."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Reading bad:
The Rockies' first run came in part from a misread ball by left fielder Conforto -- a catchable drive that turned into a double off the bat of Gonzalez and a subsequent run to tie the game in the second. Conforto seemed to have a read on it, charging in and to his left before the ball flew past him, forcing him to chase it to the wall.
"I guess I just didn't get a great read on it," Conforto said. "I didn't think he got it as well as he did, and obviously it took off on me. There's no excuse. That falls on me and I gotta work on that. I gotta get back on that ball and make sure it doesn't get behind me. I'm the last line of defense, and nothing should get behind me."
Out of line: The Mets had a late rally thwarted with two on and one out in the eighth as they trailed, 4-3. Juan Lagares came in with one out to pinch-hit for Conforto against the left-handed Boone Logan and doubled to left. After an intentional walk to Cespedes, Lucas Duda hit a hard grounder to third baseman Nolan Arenado, who made a quick attempt at a tag of Lagares before throwing to first for the out. Second base umpire Rob Drake called Lagares out for running out of the base path, resulting in an inning-ending double play.
"I was really surprised, because the guy in front of me said safe, and when I looked back, he said out," Lagares said. "I just avoided the tag. What was I supposed to do, hold him?"
At long last: deGrom held the Rockies scoreless for 15 innings in his first two starts against them. He made it to 16 before LeMahieu singled home a run in the second.

QUOTABLE
"Sometimes a rally can start real innocently like that. That was a nice snapshot of the game today. DJ worked a walk right there, and that's what I mean by making the opposing pitcher earn everything he gets." -- Rockies manager Walt Weiss on LeMahieu's 12-pitch walk in the seventh to help drive deGrom from the game and spark the game-winning rally

"We gotta bounce back, and we will. The first part of this road trip we played pretty good. We came in here thinking we'd put some runs on the board, and when you don't do it, you gotta figure you're going to be in trouble here" -- Mets manager Terry Collins on finishing an 11-game road trip by being swept in Colorado
