DETROIT -- Tigers catcher James McCann could begin a Minor League rehab assignment as soon as Tuesday night at Triple-A Toledo with a potential return from the disabled list next weekend.
McCann, who went on the 15-day DL two weeks ago after spraining his right ankle on a play at first base, ran the bases Monday afternoon at Comerica Park, the final step in ensuring he has recovered. He did catching drills with the team, taking throws from the outfield and practicing tags at the plate.
"We're going to see how he feels tomorrow," manager Brad Ausmus said. "There's a chance if he feels fine tomorrow that he could DH tomorrow in Toledo."

Ausmus has said for the past couple days he anticipates McCann needing four games of rehab before being ready to return. However, the Mud Hens are at home for just three more games, culminating with a Thursday morning matinee, before hitting the road for Charlotte.
That could lead to McCann starting his rehab assignment at Toledo and finishing it at Double-A Erie. The SeaWolves will be at home Friday for a weekend series.
