Naehring talks about spotting eventual stars

September 4th, 2018

Tim Naehring played eight seasons with the Red Sox before an arm injury forced him to retire at age 30 after the 1997 season. A twist of fate related to his charity work led to a scouting job with his hometown Reds and, more than 20 years later, Naehring is now finishing his third campaign as the Yankees' VP of Baseball Operations.
On this week's episode of Executive Access, Naehring sits down with MLB.com's Mark Feinsand to discuss his tenure with Cincinnati overseeing the development of players including Joey Votto, and , why it's important for analytics-minded front offices to also include former players, and what he saw in Didi Gregorius as a potential successor to Derek Jeter.

On Executive Access, Feinsand provides a unique look at the people building Major League teams by engaging in candid interviews with front-office personnel from around MLB. Each week, you'll find out how they broke into the game, why they do what they do and how they envision the future of baseball. Look out for new episodes on Tuesdays.
