Here are Wednesday's 10 best prospect performances

August 22nd, 2019

Here are the 10 best performances by players on team Top 30 Prospects lists from across the Minor Leagues on Wednesday:

Sean Murphy, C and Sheldon Neuse, INF, A's Nos. 3 and 8
You would assume there would be some impressive offensive performances in an 18-4 victory, and there certainly were for the A’s Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas. Oakland prospects Murphy and Neuse did half of the damage, combining for 9 RBIs for the Aviators. Murphy was playing his first game since returning from the injured list, his second stint on the IL this year, and he made a triumphant return with a pair of home runs and six RBIs. The RBI total ties a career high, and the pair of homers give him four career multihomer games. For Neuse, his homer Wednesday was more of the same, as the versatile infielder now has three homers in his past five games, with nine RBIs over that span. Athletics' prospect stats »

Isaac Paredes, INF and Willi Castro, SS, Tigers Nos. 5 and 11
Castro recorded his first career multihomer game in the opener of Triple-A Toledo’s doubleheader against Indianapolis. The 22-year-old switch-hitter hit both of his homers from the right side of the plate, connecting on solo shots in the second and sixth innings before finishing 2-for-4. The two-homer performance gives Castro 11 dingers on the season, matching his career-high total from 2017, and his .301/.366/.467 line through 117 games also represents the best mark of his career.

Paredes collected a week’s worth of hits in two games on Wednesday as he combined to go 8-for-11 at the plate in Double-A Erie’s doubleheader against Richmond. After going 3-for-5 with an RBI in the opener -- a suspended game from Tuesday that was resumed in the fifth inning -- the Tigers’ No. 5 prospect erupted for a season-high five hits in the nightcap, finishing 5-for-6 with a double, a walk and three RBIs. The 20-year-old infielder’s eight-hit day boosted his season average from .279 to .290, and he’s now driven in 59 runs in 116 games in the Eastern League. Tigers' prospect stats »

Brewer Hicklen, OF, Royals No. 15
Hicklen did not record an out in the opener of Class A Advanced Wilmington’s doubleheader against Salem. The outfielder tallied four runs and RBIs apiece, hitting a pair of home runs as well as a double as part of a 3-for-3 performance that included a walk. He’s totaled 11 homers and 38 steals this season with his intriguing power-speed combo. Royals' prospect stats »

Clarke Schmidt, RHP, Yankees No. 5
Schmidt rebounded from a shaky Double-A debut (5.1 IP, 5 ER) to dominate in his second Trenton start. The Yankees’ No. 5 prospect racked up nine strikeouts and faced three above the minimum over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, throwing 57 of 92 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old right-hander and former first-round pick (2017) was promoted to Double-A after posting 63 1/3 innings of 3.84 ERA ball for Class A Advanced Tampa. In that span, Schmidt, who features three above average or better offerings, compiled 69 strikeouts against 24 walks and allowed just two home runs. Yankees' prospect stats »

Daulton Varsho, C, D-backs No. 5
Varsho collected his second four-hit game of the season Wednesday, including a third-inning solo homer, to raise his average over .300 for the Double-A Jackson Generals. The homer was his third extra-base hit in two games, and his fifth dinger in August. The 2017 MLB Draft pick out of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has advanced skills at the plate -- evidenced by his .301 career average in the Minors -- and offers a surprising bit of speed on the bases. He has 46 steals in 233 career games, being caught stealing only nine times. D-backs' prospect stats »

Adam Kloffenstein, RHP, Blue Jays No. 11
It’s hard to do much more than Adam Kloffenstein did on Wednesday and not earn a win, but the 18-year-old can still hold his head high after striking out seven batters over seven scoreless innings. It’s the second straight scoreless outing for the 2018 Draft pick out of the Texas prep ranks, and his fourth this year for the Canadians. Vancouver, Toronto’s Class A Short-Season affiliate, was held scoreless for nine innings in the contest -- as was their opposition, the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Canadians won in 10 innings, but Kloffenstein was still stuck with a no-decision. Blue Jays' prospect stats »

Tim Cate, LHP, Nationals No. 6
No. 6 prospect Tim Cate has taken the mound for Class A Advanced Potomac four times in August, and each time he’s delivered a quality start. On Wednesday the 21-year-old southpaw permitted just three hits over seven scoreless innings (matching the longest outing of his career) to lead the P-Nats past Frederick, 6-3. Cate struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk, pounding the strike zone with 59 of his 86 pitches. The 2018 second-round pick has been a model of consistency in his first full season, posting a 3.15 ERA with 132 strikeouts and 29 walks in 131 1/3 innings (24 starts) between Potomac and Class A Hagerstown. Luis Campusano, C, Padres No. 8
No. 8 prospect Luis Campusano was named the California League’s co-MVP on Wednesday and celebrated the honor by going 2-for-5 with a walk-off three-run homer for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. The 20-year-old backstop has distinguished himself as one of baseball’s top catching prospects this season by hitting 14 homers and 27 doubles while leading the California League in average (.321) and ranking third in RBIs (72).
