Wednesday's top prospect performers

May 30th, 2019

Here's a look at Wednesday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays: Anthony Alford, OF (No. 10) -- 2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI (Triple-A Buffalo)
Alford, who has hits in 14 of his past 15 games, extended his hitting streak to six games and drove in three runs for the fourth time this season. The 24-year-old has seen an increase in production lately and is hitting .292 with 15 RBIs in May, after hitting .138 with eight RBIs in April. Alford, a third-round pick from the 2012 Draft, appeared in 17 Major League games last season and went 0-for-3 in his lone appearance this year.

Orioles: Austin Hays, OF (No. 5) -- 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI (Double-A Bowie)
Hays matched his season high for RBIs with one swing as he hit his third homer of the year, a three-run blast, in the ninth inning of Bowie’s loss to Akron. Hays, 23, got a late start to the season as he recovered from offseason ankle surgery, but he appears to be rounding into form after taking a few games to knock off the rust. Hays began the year with Class A Advanced Frederick, where he hit .162 over nine games, but since he was moved up to Bowie, he’s hit .308 in six games.

Rays: Jesus Sanchez, OF (No. 4, MLB No. 36) -- 3-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Montgomery)
Sanchez extended his hitting streak to five games with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, in the first inning of Montgomery's win over Birmingham. The 21-year-old, whom the Rays signed in 2014, then went and picked up two more hits to match his season high with three. Sanchez has hit over .300 in three of the past four seasons and is putting together another impressive campaign in his first full-season at Double-A. Sanchez spent 27 games with Montgomery at the end of last year and hit .214, but through 45 games this season, he's bumped that number up to .297. Lucius Fox, the Rays' No. 10 prospect, also homered and went 2-for-4 for Montgomery.
Rays prospects stats »

Red Sox: Zach Schellenger, RHP (No. 28) -- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (Class A Advanced Salem)
Relievers are supposed to have short memories, and that’s exactly what Schellenger demonstrated for Salem. After being charged with four runs in just two-thirds of an inning Saturday, the 2017 sixth-round pick bounced back and struck out the side Wednesday. Schellender did issue a walk, but needed just 18 pitches (10 strikes) to put a zero on the board in his second appearance for Salem.

Yankees: No Yankees Top 30 Prospects played on Wednesday.

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians: Nolan Jones, 3B (No. 2, No. 59 in MLB) -- 1-for-2, HR, 4 RBI (Class A Advanced Lynchburg)
If you're only going to get one hit, a grand slam is a pretty good one to get. Jones cleared the bases with his fourth homer of the year as part of Lynchburg's eight-run sixth inning. The Hillcats topped Frederick, 12-3, as Jones lifted his average to .306 and extended his hitting streak to seven games. The 21-year-old has hit .306 in both April and May this year, but his power picked up later in the year as all four of his homers have come this month.
Indians prospects stats »

Royals: Brewer Hicklen, OF (No. 16) -- 1-for-4, 2 RBI (Class A Advanced Wilmington)
Hicklen’s two-run single in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference in Wilmington’s 4-3 win over Fayetteville. Hicklen, whom the Brewers selected in the seventh round of the 2017 Draft, hit well in both 2017 (.321) and ’18 (.289). However, Hicklen did struggle a bit late last year as he hit .211 over 22 games once he was promoted to Wilmington, and those struggles appeared to be carrying over early this year as he hit .204 through April. But then Hicklen started to get back to his old ways and hit .266 in May, bringing his season average up to .241.
Royals prospects stats »

Tigers: Alex Faedo, RHP (No. 9) -- 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 12 K (Double-A Erie)
Faedo retired the first 10 batters he faced and struck out the side in the third and fifth innings on his way to his third win of the season. The 12 strikeouts also marked a career high for Faedo, who had fanned 10 twice since the Tigers selected him 18th overall in the 2017 Draft. Faedo pitched to a 4.02 ERA over 24 starts last year and reached Double-A in his first full season. This season he's 3-3 with a 3.81 ERA through 10 starts.
Tigers prospects stats »

Twins: Trevor Larnach, OF (No. 5) -- 3-for-4, HR, 5 RBI (Class A Advanced Fort Myers)
Larnach set a career high for RBIs as he continues to swing a hot bat for the Miracle. The 22-year-old hit .244 in April, but he caught fire and is hitting .381 in May. Larnach has hits in five straight games and is 7-for-9 in his past two games. The Twins selected Larnach with the 20th pick in last year's Draft, and after hitting .303 in his debut, Larnach is putting together another strong showing, hitting .306 through 48 games.
Twins prospects stats »

White Sox: Luis Robert, OF (No. 2, No. 18 in MLB) -- 2-for-5, 3B, 2 RBI (Double-A Birmingham)
Robert may as well have a permanent spot in this story if he continues to rake at such a prolific pace. The 21-year-old is hitting .373 over two levels this season and is also in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak. Robert is 6-for-10 with five RBIs over the past two games and is hitting .309 since being promoted to Birmingham on April 30.
White Sox prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

A’s: Jorge Mateo, SS (No. 8) -- 3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI (Triple-A Las Vegas)
Mateo, who now has seven homers through 49 games, is well on his way to matching his career high of 12. The 23-year-old, in his second full season with the Athletics' organization since being acquired from the Yankees, is putting together a breakthrough offensive campaign. Mateo hit .230 last year, but is certainly taking advantage of playing in hitter-friendly Las Vegas. Mateo has hits in nine of his past 10 games -- including a trio of three-hit performances -- and is hitting .332 this season.
A's prospects stats »

Angels: Luis Madero, RHP (No. 21) -- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Double-A Mobile)
Madero extended his scoreless streak to 11 innings as he picked up his third win in four starts. The 22-year-old Venezuelan, whom the Angels acquired at the 2017 Trade Deadline, began the year with Class A Advanced Inland Empire, but was quickly bumped up to Mobile after posting a 1.13 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 16 innings. In Double-A, the competition may be better, but Madero is still having success with his fastball and above-average slider. Madero has thrown 31 innings with Mobile, posted a 2.90 ERA and struck out 26. He’s also walked seven.
Angels prospects stats »

Astros: Enoli Paredes, RHP (No. 26) -- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K (Class A Advanced Fayetteville)
After giving up four runs over 4 2/3 innings on May 1, Paredes has been lights out. Paredes has made four starts since then and surrendered just one earned run over 20 innings. The 23-year-old, a 2015 international signee, has pitched to a 1.58 ERA this season and has 53 strikeouts over 40 innings. Paredes retired the first 13 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the second inning, and threw 45 of his 77 pitches for strikes in the no-decision.
Astros prospects stats »

Mariners: No Mariners prospects recorded noteworthy statistics in the Minors on Wednesday.

Rangers: Sam Huff, OF (No. 21) -- 3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI (Class A Advanced Down East)
Huff has hits in nine of his past 10 games, including six multihit efforts after his latest three-hit performance. Huff absolutely raked with Class A Hickory and forced a promotion with his .333/.368/796 line through 30 games and has continued to hit for Down East as he's batting .343 through 19 games. The 21-year-old has also already hit 18 homers this season, matching his total from last year, a number he reached in 118 games.
Rangers prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves: Cristian Pache, OF (No. 1, No. 17 in MLB) -- 2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI (Double-A Mississippi)
Pache hit his fourth homer of the year and extended his hitting streak to five games in Mississippi's win over Pensacola. Pache, 20, is hitting .302 through 47 games this season, but that should hardly come as a surprise. Pache has posted strong numbers at every level since he signed with the Braves in 2015 and is also arguably the top defensive outfielder in the Minors. While Pache provided the offense, Tucker Davidson (Braves No. 20) struck out eight over six scoreless innings.
Braves prospects stats »

Marlins: Zac Gallen, RHP (No. 18) -- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K (Triple-A New Orleans)
It's hardly a surprise when Gallen stifles an opposing offense these days as he's now surrendered one earned run or fewer in eight of his 11 starts this season. The 23-year-old threw 72 of his 106 pitches for strikes, retired six of the first seven batters he faced and didn't allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth inning. The Marlins acquired Gallen from the Cardinals in 2017 and he posted a 3.65 ERA over 25 starts last season, his first in the Marlins' organization.
Marlins prospects stats »

Mets: Ali Sanchez, C (No. 26) -- 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, BB (Double-A Binghamton)
Sanchez, whom the Mets signed in 2013 out of Venezuela, hit his first homer of the year, a two-run blast in the sixth inning. The 23-year-old has been strong defensively since signing with the Mets, but he hasn’t progressed well offensively. Sanchez hit .265 with a career-high six homers a season ago and is hitting .250 in his first Double-A experience.
Mets prospects stats »

Nationals: Nick Raquet, LHP (No. 22) -- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Class A Advanced Potomac)
Raquet threw 45 of his 72 pitches for strikes as he picked up his second consecutive win and spun his first scoreless start of the season. The 23-year-old has had some ups and downs this year, as illustrated by his 5.70 ERA. Raquet, who took a big step forward with his fastball command last year, has also struck out 41 and walked 15 in 47 1/3 innings.
Nationals prospects stats »

Phillies: Adam Haseley, OF (No. 3) -- 3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI (Triple-A Lehigh Valley)
Haseley wasted no time introducing himself to his new team as he delivered RBI doubles in each of his first two Triple-A at-bats. Haseley, a 2017 first-round Draft pick, began the year with Double-A Reading, where he hit .268/.356/.471 over 41 games. Haseley has been hitting better of late though as he has hits in 13 of his past 14 games and is hitting .355 in May.
Phillies prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers: Brice Turang, SS (No. 3) -- 2-for-5, 2 RBI, BB (Class A Wisconsin)
Turang, who has hits in 17 of his past 18 games -- including each of the past five -- has raised his average from .283 on May 10 to .315 after Wednesday's game. The 19-year-old had an advanced approach at the plate when the Brewers selected him 21st overall in last year’s Draft and those reports are ringing true early in his first full season. Turang hit .283/.396/.352 over 42 games in his pro debut and is slashing .315/.419/.416 through 48 games this season.
Brewers prospects stats »

Cardinals: Jhon Torres, OF (No. 4) -- 2-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI (Class A Peoria)
Torres got off to an abysmal start to the season and was 0-for-14 through the first six games. Fast forward a few weeks and the 19-year-old is 8-for-17 over the past five games after setting a season high with three RBIs. Torres, whom the Cardinals acquired via a trade at last year’s Trade Deadline, has also doubled in two of the past three games, his first two doubles of the season.
Cardinals prospects stats »

Cubs: Tyson Miller, RHP (No. 19) -- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K (Double-A Tennessee)
Miller bounced back from his worst start of the year (4.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R) with a strong start that brought his ERA down to 2.06. Miller has surrendered two earned runs or fewer in nine of his 10 starts this season and is faring well in his first taste of Double-A action. A 2016 draftee (fourth round), Miller went 9-9 with a 3.54 ERA last year with Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach.
Cubs prospects stats »

Pirates: Will Craig, 1B (No. 14) -- 1-for-4, 2B (Triple-A Indianapolis)
Craig has hits in five straight games, but is just 3-for-12 over the past three nights. The 24-year-old, a 2016 first-round pick, is hitting .270 through 47 games and is really impressing in his first year of Triple-A. Craig hit a career-best 20 homers over 132 games last year and seems poised to crush that number as he’s already amassed 15 homers this season. What’s more, Craig has improved in all three triple-slash categories, going from .248/.321/.448 to .270/.353/.567.
Pirates prospects stats »

Reds: TJ Friedl, OF (No. 13) -- 4-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI in Game 1, 1-for-3 in Game 2 (Double-A Chattanooga)
Friedl has hits in four straight games and in five of his past six after picking up hits in both halves of a Chattanooga's doubleheader. The 24-year-old set a career high with four hits, including a solo homer that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win, in the first game and has caught fire recently. Friedl hit .181 in April, but is now hitting .265 and has eight hits over his past 16 at-bats.

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

D-backs: Matt Mercer, RHP (No. 27) -- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K (Class A Advanced Visalia)
Mercer, a fifth-round pick from last year's Draft, threw 41 of his 65 pitches for strikes in what was one of his better starts this season. Mercer entered play having given up nine runs over two starts (10 innings), but got back in rhythm with his second scoreless start of the year. Mercer was constantly pitching out of the stretch, but manage to avoid any damage because he generated seven strikeouts, his second highest total of the year. Mercer has pitched to a 5.25 ERA this season, but has also racked up 44 strikeouts in 33 innings.
D-backs prospects stats »

Dodgers: Josiah Gray, RHP (No. 17) -- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga)
The righty twirled his best start and picked up his first win with the Quakes since he was promoted from Great Lakes. Gray, whom the Dodgers acquired as part of the Yasiel Puig trade in December, had a 1.93 ERA over five starts with the Loons, but struggled a bit after the promotion. However, he threw the ball well Wednesday night and perhaps that’s a sign of things to come.
Dodgers prospects stats »

Giants: Jacob Heyward, OF (No. 30) -- 2-for-4, BB (Double-A Richmond)
Heyward is 3-for-9 over the past two games and hitting .264 on the year. The Giants grabbed Jason’s brother in the 18th round of the 2016 Draft and he’s improved each year in the system. The 23-year-old is hitting .264 this season and coming off a 2018 campaign during which he hit .260 with a career-high 12 homers.
Giants prospects stats »

Padres: Blake Hunt, C (No. 28) -- 1-for-3, RBI (Class A Fort Wayne)
Hunt’s RBI single in the sixth inning was all the offense Fort Wayne needed to top West Michigan in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Hunt’s defense, specifically his arm strength, is his calling card and although he hasn’t hit much early in his career, the 20-year-old has good strike zone awareness and may develop a bit of power. Through 39 games this season, Hunt is hitting .213/.316/.338.
Padres prospects stats »

Rockies: Ryan Rolison, LHP (No. 3) -- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K (Class A Advanced Lancaster)
Rolison, last year’s No. 22 overall Draft pick, threw 59 of his 83 pitches for strikes and didn’t issue a walk for the third time this season. Rolison posted a 1.89 ERA and pitched just 29 innings in his pro debut as the Rockies limited his workload after the college season and the Draft. Now, making his full season debut, Rolison has a bit of a longer leash and he’s been equally impressive. The lefty has yielded one run or fewer in eight of his 10 starts and has a 55/13 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 55 1/3 innings.
