The Chicago White Sox have acquired catcher Alfredo Gonzalez from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations and have optioned him to Class AA Birmingham. To make room for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster, the White Sox have transferred right-handed pitcher Daniel Webb to the 60-day disabled list.
Gonzalez, 23, was designated for assignment on June 25 after hitting .158 (23-146) with five doubles, seven RBI, 14 walks and 14 runs scored over 44 games with Class AA Corpus Christi in the Astros organization. He has thrown out 45.5 percent (18-33) of attempted basestealers this season.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Gonzalez hit a combined .321 (80-249) with six doubles, two home runs, 35 RBI and a .409 on-base percentage over 73 games between Class A Quad Cities, Class A Lancaster and Corpus Christi in 2015. He threw out 47.1 percent (24-51) of attempted basestealers across the three clubs.
Gonzalez is a career .236 hitter (211-894) with 28 doubles, seven home runs and 85 RBI in 284 games over seven minor-leagues seasons in the Houston system. He owns a lifetime 35.3 caught stealing percentage (71-201). Gonzalez, a native of Santa Teresa del Tuy, Venezuela, originally was signed by the Astros as a free agent on July 23, 2008.
Webb, 26, underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on June 10 after being placed on the disabled list on April 29.
