Fans should mark their calendars for the White Sox Throwback Game on Saturday, July 23 vs. Detroit, marking the 40th anniversary of one of baseball's most innovative team looks - pull-over jerseys worn pajama style outside the trousers with accompanying navy shorts. This season on July 23, the White Sox will wear the navy blue collared jerseys untucked with pants, while the first 20,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive a similar 1976 Navy Blue Throwback Jersey, presented by XFINITY.
While the team will not wear shorts on July 23, the White Sox became the first baseball team to wear shorts in a major league game on August 8 during that 1976 season. The White Sox wore the collared jerseys from 1976-1981, including three games (game one of a doubleheader on August 8, and August 21 and 22) in 1976 with shorts.
Franchise greats to sport the collared jerseys in 1976 include Hall-of-Famer Rich "Goose" Gossage, two-time All-Star Chet Lemon as well as two-time All-Star and current White Sox ambassador Carlos May. White Sox greats also wore the 1976 jerseys in later seasons, including Hall-of-Fame catcher Carlton Fisk (1981), six-time All-Star slugger and White Sox ambassador Harold Baines (1980-1981), current White Sox radio broadcaster Ed Farmer (1979-1981) and current White Sox television broadcaster Steve Stone (1977-1978). The jerseys made a return in the 2015 season, as the White Sox wore the white collared jerseys untucked with pants vs. Seattle on August 27.
To further celebrate the 40th anniversary of this iconic look, the first 20,000 fans will have the opportunity to take home a blue 1976 throwback White Sox Cap, presented by The PrivateBank, on Saturday, July 9 vs. Atlanta.
Additional updates about special events and activities will be announced throughout the 2016 season. The complete promotional schedule can be found at whitesox.com/promos.
