Petricka returns to DL with elbow strain

September 8th, 2017

CHICAGO -- The 2017 season certainly has not been the healthiest one for White Sox reliever Jake Petricka.
Petricka was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday (retroactive to Tuesday) with a right elbow strain. It's his third trip to the DL after stints from June 26-July 27 with a right elbow strain and April 5-June 8 with a right lat strain.
"Right now it's, 'Really? Again?'" Petricka said. "But we push our bodies to the limit every day we go out there and sometimes it just doesn't hold up.
"We're not worried about this at all. It's just another bump in the road we've got to take care of. We took pictures and it came back very minor. We've got a plan of attack and know it will work."
This elbow strain is different from the first one in terms of the pain being more gradual than instant.
"Decent workload going on throughout the previous couple of weeks and just kind of built up and one of the wear-down injuries, not the acute, one-pitch injury," said Petricka, who has a 7.01 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings this season. "Frustrating, for sure, and a learning experience. It's giving me plenty of work in the offseason, strengthen the entire body again."

Fulmer gets the nod
Career start No. 2 for , the No. 11 White Sox prospect per MLBPipeline.com, will take place Sunday against the Giants. White Sox manager Rick Renteria had indicated the right-hander would get a start or two during September.
Fulmer tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief Tuesday, after picking up his first career win Saturday. But it's too early to label Fulmer's career path as part of the rotation or in the bullpen per Renteria.
"His start this Sunday will be a tell," Renteria said. "The times we use him to relieve will be a tell. We are still trying to define. His desire is to be a starter.
"Most guys that end up becoming relievers at some point were starters first, but that story has yet to be written. We don't know yet what he's going to be. We think he can start. He believes he can start, and we'll run the table and see what happens."
Cleveland sets an example
Renteria allows himself to envision a time when the rebuilding White Sox, who started Thursday at 54-84, will be at the level of dominance in the next two or three years as the red-hot Indians.
"They have seen this [Cleveland] club build from within, put themselves in a position over the last few years to continue to compete for a postseason position and to go to the World Series," Renteria said. "Why wouldn't you want to look at clubs that are doing it and what things they are doing to put them in that position and aspire to have your players attain those feats?
"We talk about it a lot. Unless you talk about it, how can you attain anything?"
Third to first
