CHICAGO -- With the White Sox a Major League-worst 4-23 since July 4, it's not hard to have eyes wander over to the Minor League box scores.
The White Sox farm system, ranked as the best in baseball in MLBPipeline.com's midseason rankings, has continued to do more than just add top-line talent such as MLB Pipeline's No. 1 prospectYoan Moncada or No. 7 prospect Eloy Jimenez -- it's begun developing organizational depth as well.
Chicago made its latest step in adding to the overall depth of its farm system on Sunday, claiming infielder D.J. Peterson off waivers from the Mariners organization. Peterson is another former first-round pick in the White Sox organization, after Seattle chose him in the 2013 Draft, and the Mariners' No. 14 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com won't even crack Chicago's top 30.
Peterson joins White Sox No. 14 and 19 prospects Casey Gillaspie and Ryan Cordell as recent acquisitions who will be in Triple-A Charlotte and could be in the big leagues sooner, while some of the bigger names -- such as Jimenez -- remain in High-A ball and would come up later in the process.
So who else has stood out down on the farm?
Lucas Giolito, Triple-A Charlotte
Giolito, the No. 60 prospect in baseball (No. 7 in the White Sox system), is starting to show some of the consistency -- particularly in his delivery -- the organization anticipated when it acquired him as one of the key pieces in the Adam Eaton trade this offseason. After going seven innings in back-to-back starts, Giolito was again proficient on Saturday, albeit in a shorter outing. He struck out seven over five scoreless innings, marking the third time in his last six starts he hasn't allowed an earned run.
Michael Kopech, Double-A Birmingham
Kopech, the top right-handed pitching prospect and No. 12 overall prospect in baseball, appears to have figured something out since July 14. In that stretch, he's run off five consecutive quality starts, including striking out 11 batters and allowing just four hits over seven shutout innings on Saturday. Kopech is 8-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 21 Double-A starts this season after coming over with Moncada as part of the Chris Sale trade this offseason.
Alec Hansen, Class A Advanced Winston-Salem
Hansen was dominating at Class-A Kannapolis this season with a 2.48 ERA, so the organization promoted him to Winston-Salem. He's responded well, posting a 2.38 ERA over his first eight starts with the club. The White Sox' No. 9 prospect is in the midst of a run of three consecutive quality starts, including back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances after he struck out 12 in six scoreless innings on Saturday.
Worth noting
White Sox international signing and No. 4 prospect Luis Robert has bounced back well after missing close to a month with a left meniscus injury. He homered in his first game back on Aug. 1, and followed it up with a 3-hit game two games later.
Jimenez, who the White Sox acquired as part of the Jose Quintana trade with the Cubs, keeps raking. His OPS remains at 1.091 in the 22 games since he's been acquired, and he's already taken home White Sox Minor League co-Player of the Month honors for July.
