ARLINGTON -- Starter Mat Latos stayed undefeated despite the White Sox 6-5 loss to the Rangers on Wednesday, but he assessed his seventh start of the season fairly harshly.
Latos issued a career-high five walks and allowed five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings
"Pretty terrible," Latos said of his no-decision. "Walking four guys [plus one intentionally], not giving our defense a chance to make plays and help me out. I was able to get out of a couple of jams I put myself in. [But] some costly walks and they took advantage of it. I did not pitch well at all."
Latos is 5-0, but his ERA over his past three starts stands at 7.63 (13 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings). He has given up four or more earned runs in each of those three outings after permitting only two earned runs over 24 1/3 innings in his first four starts.
Latos didn't get into any trouble in the first two innings on Wednesday, but he allowed back-to-back singles to start the third. Ian Desmond later singled in a run and Nomar Mazara drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

But it was the fifth and sixth innings that galled Latos most. In the fifth, he got a flyout and then walked the next two batters, both of whom eventually scored on Prince Fielder's double. In the sixth, Latos allowed a leadoff single to Ryan Rua, who scored the last run charged to Latos on Desmond's single off reliever Dan Jennings.
"The offspeed was inconsistent with strikes today, a lot of high sliders today, really wasn't finishing," Latos said. "I've got to get back to having the slider over for strikes and keep pounding the zone. A couple of mistakes where balls were supposed to be away, I left them a little bit more over the plate."
