White Sox promote C Smith, RHP Minaya

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA Charlotte and have added right-handed pitcher Juan Minaya from Charlotte to serve as the 26th man on the active roster for today's doubleheader at Minnesota.

Smith, 29, is batting .268 (30-112) with four doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI and 12 runs scored over 30 games with Charlotte this season. He recorded five multihit efforts in his last five games. Smith began the season on the White Sox 10-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle before being reinstated and optioned to Charlotte on April 21.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Smith spent most of the 2017 season with the Sox, batting .283 (78-276) with four homers, 30 RBI and 23 runs scored in 87 games (70 starts). His .283 average was a franchise-record for rookie catchers.

Minaya, 27, is 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA (11 ER/21.1 IP), two saves and 24 strikeouts over 17 relief appearances with the Knights this season. He also has made five appearances over two stints with the White Sox in 2018, allowing four runs on three hits and nine walks over 3.1 IP.

Minaya, 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, made 40 appearances with Chicago in 2017, going 3-2 with a 4.53 ERA (22 ER/43.2 IP), 51 strikeouts and nine saves. He led all American League rookies in saves.
