PITTSBURGH -- Right-hander Wilfredo Boscan was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday and will make his first Major League start against the Giants at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Boscan was scheduled to start Tuesday as Indianapolis faced Gwinnett, which was a major factor in calling him up, according to Pirates manager Clint Hurdle.

"Sometimes being lined up is as big as anything," Hurdle said. "A guy that's not lined up, you're going to pitch him early in a Major League game or you're going to pitch him short. We didn't feel we had anybody in the bullpen right now who could give us the kind of support he can give us to start."

Since A.J. Schugel had thrown two innings Sunday and the rotation is still short Gerrit Cole, placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right triceps strain June 14, the Pirates could use another arm.

Boscan has a 2.92 ERA in five relief appearances for Pittsburgh this season, earning his first Major League victory May 23 against Colorado. He is 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts) for Indianapolis. In addition to Boscan's availability, Hurdle was happy to give him the opportunity considering his performances out of the bullpen this season.

"Boscan has pitched well out of the bullpen, with length two times, and he was lined up," Hurdle said. "Give him this opportunity and see what he can do with it."

Righty Curtis Partch was optioned to Indianapolis to make room for Boscan on the active roster.
