Yanks place Hicks on DL with hammy strain

NEW YORK -- The Yankees placed outfielder on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sept. 1, with a right hamstring strain.
Hicks suffered the injury last Wednesday in Kansas City while running out a ground ball to short, and an MRI on Thursday revealed a Grade 2 strain.
The 26-year-old has hit .213 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in his first season with the Yankees. He posted a .280 average with four home runs and nine RBIs in August.
"I'm not sure why we [put him on the DL] because it happened during the game," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after Monday's 5-3 win. "He's going to have another test tomorrow -- the contrast one."
Hicks has played all three outfield spots, but he has spent a majority of his time this season in right field.
With expanded September rosters in effect, Girardi has several options in right. -- who started there on Monday and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts -- is expected to continue to get at-bats, with , and the recently acquired also candidates to play.
