Yankees add veteran bat Parmelee to mix

February 22nd, 2016

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Yankees have found some insurance to fill out their depth chart at first base, agreeing to a Minor League contract with left-handed hitting veteran Chris Parmelee late on Sunday.
General manager Brian Cashman confirmed the signing, though Parmelee announced it himself, posting a picture of the Yankees logo on his Instagram account with the caption, "So excited to start this new chapter. #Yankees #MLB"
Parmelee, who can also play both corner outfield spots, played 32 games for the Orioles last season, batting .216/.255/.433.

A first-round pick of the Twins in the 2006 Draft, Parmelee spent four seasons with the Twins before heading to Baltimore. He turns 28 on Wednesday and is a career .245 hitter with 28 homers and 94 RBIs in 305 games.
Mark Teixeira is entrenched as the starting first baseman with Dustin Ackley projected as his backup, so Parmelee will likely begin the year at Triple-A unless there is an injury during Spring Training. General manager Brian Cashman has said the Yankees were looking for a new Triple-A first baseman with Greg Bird set to miss the season due to shoulder surgery.
