Yanks homer 4 times behind Tanaka-led shutout

August 20th, 2016

ANAHEIM -- Home runs came for the Yankees from both the top and bottom of the lineup, plus multiple places in between, as they shut out the Angels, 7-0, on Friday night at Angel Stadium to open a three-game series.
got things going with a homer to right on the third pitch of the night from Angels starter . Ninth-place hitter led off the fifth with the first homer of his big league career, while No. 2 hitter and cleanup man also went deep against Weaver in the frame.
Yankees starter earned the win, striking out nine without issuing a walk over 7 2/3 innings. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing consecutive singles to and in the fourth. Tanaka then recorded seven outs in a row before another Trout single leading off the seventh.
"I think he used all his pitches," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Thought he had a good fastball, he used that extremely well. Thought he used some early curveballs, split was good, slider, he had everything."

Weaver was charged with five runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He was removed after the home run to McCann. Friday's start marked the first time Weaver allowed four or more homers in a game since April 6, 2014, against the Astros.
"Couldn't keep the ball in the yard," said Weaver, whose 6.24 career ERA against the Yankees is his highest against any American League club.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
From top ...: Ellsbury gave an early sign of things to come in the first at-bat of the game. The outfielder took an 83-mph two-seamer 368 feet into the right-field corner to spot the Yankees the only run they would need and give him his fifth long ball of the season. It was also the first leadoff homer of the season for the Yankees.

... to bottom: Not only was Torreyes' homer in the fifth inning the first of his career, it also added into the first four-hit game of his career. Not many would have foreseen such a night for the rookie third baseman, but predicted at least a homer after watching Torreyes go deep to center in batting practice.
"My job is to come to the ballpark ready to play," Torreyes said through an interpreter. "Although I don't play every day, once I get the opportunity to play, I want to do my best."

Two for Trout: Trout had two of the Angels' five hits off Tanaka. It was his 36th game with multiple hits this season, but he came up empty when the club really need it. Trout had a chance to get the Angels on the board in the eighth, batting with two outs and the bases loaded after Tanaka left the game, but he struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch from .

Escobar exits: Angels third baseman was removed from the game in the fourth inning after fouling a pitch off his face on a bunt attempt. He was replaced by , who made two tough plays on sharp grounders against his former team. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said it's possible Escobar could go on the disabled list, though preliminary X-rays came back negative.
"He's sore," Scioscia said. "We're certainly going to check and see where he is tonight and tomorrow. He's going to be sore for a while."  More >

"Nothing hurts worse than letting your teammates down, and I've been doing that on a pretty consistent basis, so it's definitely a tough pill to swallow." -- Weaver, on his performance
