NEW YORK -- Starlin Castro atoned for a key throwing error with a game-tying double and Chase Headley cleared the bases with a three-run triple as the Yankees warmed up for Derek Jeter Night with an 11-6 victory over the Astros in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.
New York produced a six-run seventh inning, with the big hits coming off star reliever Chris Devenski. Matthew Holliday and Chris Carter also drove in runs in the frame, and Brett Gardner padded the Yanks' lead with a solo homer in the eighth off Tony Sipp as they snapped their three-game losing streak.
"It was pretty important, not only for myself, but for the team," Headley said. "These guys have played us pretty tough the last couple of games. It's been a little bit of a struggle lately, so it was a good time to break through and a good time to get a hit."
The rally came after Castro threw away Marwin Gonzalez's potential double-play ball in the top half of the seventh, part of a three-run inning against Yankees reliever Adam Warren.

"I just forgot about the error. That's a play I'm supposed to make," Castro said. "I just rushed myself too much. I just came to the plate and had a good at-bat."
Castro and Aaron Judge gave New York the lead with back-to-back homers in the fourth inning off Mike Fiers, who has now served up a league-high 16 homers.

"Part of Mike's troubles has been keeping the ball in the ballpark," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "It's a fine line when you're a fly-ball-type pitcher and you pitch up in the zone, and when he makes a mistake, it seems to be hurting him right now."
With the Yanks preparing to honor their longtime captain between games, Castro's two-run shot was a Jeter-esque two-run poke to the short porch in right field, while Judge's Major League-leading 14th blast was a towering 441-foot shot that struck the roof of the center-field restaurant. Judge's barreled drive came off the bat at 109.7 mph, according to Statcast™.
"Credit to the Yankees," Hinch said. "Obviously, they put up some really good at-bats to send nine or 10 guys up to the plate [in the seventh]."
Chad Green worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief behind Yankees starter Luis Severino, who lacked fastball command and threw 77 pitches in just 2 1/3 innings. Carlos Correa, Evan Gattis and Gonzalez all stroked run-scoring singles in the third inning to help chase Severino.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Star bright: Castro came into the afternoon in a 3-for-22 slump before delivering two of the Yanks' biggest hits of the afternoon. Devenski couldn't get a 95-mph fastball past the second baseman, who ripped it down the right field line to drive home Jacoby Ellsbury with the game-tying run. An intentional walk to Judge followed, and Headley made the Astros pay with a drive up the gap in right-center field.

"I think that's real good," Castro said. "We were not hitting well the first two games, but we have to know that we faced the two best pitchers in the league [in Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers]. It's good to be back and start hitting like we do."
It's easy being Green: Houston knocked Severino out with five hits in the third inning, prompting the Yanks to call upon Green, who had been summoned from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day. Green got Alex Bregman to hit into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play, then cruised over the next three frames, permitting only a George Springer single that glanced off of Judge's glove in right field.
"I thought he did a great job," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Obviously, he comes in and gets a bunch of big outs. … I'm really happy with what Chad did here on short notice."

Astros: Right-hander Charlie Morton will start Sunday's 6:35 p.m. CT second game of the doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. In his past three starts, Morton is 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA.
Yankees: Following the Jeter festivities, right-hander Masahiro Tanaka will take the ball on Sunday at 7:35 p.m. ET as the Yankees conclude their four-game series with the Astros. Tanaka has won each of his past five starts, posting a 2.78 ERA over that span.
