Astros announce minor league players of the month for April

The Houston Astros player development department has named OF Yordan Alvarez the Astros Minor League Player of the Month for April, and RHP Cristian Javier the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

Alvarez, 21, batted .347 (26x75) with 20 runs scored, six doubles, 11 homers, 29 RBI and a 1.372 OPS (.443 OBP/.867 SLG) in 21 games in April with the Triple A Round Rock Express. The left-handed hitter put together a number of incredible offensive feats during the month, including a three-homer game on April 6, a run in which he homered four times in a six-game span from April 16-22, and a 4x5 performance with two doubles and a home run on April 27.

Alvarez currently ranks among the top-three Pacific Coast League hitters in RBI (37, 1st), total bases (85, 1st), homers (12, T-1st), hits (39, 2nd), extra-base hits (22, 2nd), batting average (.402, 2nd), OPS (1.372, 2nd), slugging percentage (.876, 2nd) and on-base percentage (.496, 3rd).

Javier, 22, went 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA (2ER/20IP), 10 walks, 26 strikeouts and a .143 opponent batting average in five games (4 starts) in April for Class A Advanced Fayetteville. The right-handed pitcher posted a scoreless outing in three of his five games during the month.

On the season, Javier currently leads the Carolina League in ERA (0.73) and ranks sixth in strikeouts (32).
