July 2nd, 2019

PITTSBURGH -- The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks off of the 10-day injured list and recalled left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitchers Adbert Alzolay and Rowan Wick were optioned to Triple-A Iowa following last night’s game.

Both Hendricks, who will make the start, and Rosario will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their four-game series at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hendricks, 29, was placed on the injured list on June 15 with right shoulder inflammation and did not require a rehab assignment as part of his return. Hendricks has gone 7-5 with a 3.36 ERA (33 ER/88.1 IP) in 15 starts this season and took a six-game winning streak into his most recent start on June 14 vs. Los Angeles, when he was charged with five earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched and placed on the I.L. the next day. Hendricks was 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA (13 ER/58.2 IP) in his eight starts leading up to that June 14 outing.

Rosario, 25, was a member of Chicago’s Opening Day roster and joins the Cubs for the third time this season. He has posted no record and a 6.43 ERA (5 ER/7.0 IP) in eight relief outings during his previous stints, the last of which ended on April 25. With Iowa this year, Rosario has gone 0-2 with four saves and a 2.25 ERA (5 ER/20.0 IP), including a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) in his last eight outings starting June 8.

After making his big league debut with Minnesota in 2017, Rosario has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Cubs and gone 4-0 with one save and a 4.02 ERA (32 ER/56.0 IP) in 52 relief outings with Chicago.

Alzolay, 24, has gone 1-1 with a 7.15 ERA (9 ER/11.1 IP) in three appearances, two starts, with the Cubs this season. He has gone 2-1 with a 0.94 WHIP and 3.09 ERA (11 ER/32.0 IP) in six starts with Iowa this year.

Wick, 26, has posted no record and a 3.86 ERA (3 ER/7.0 IP) in five relief outings with the Cubs this year. He has no record with four saves and a 2.22 ERA (7 ER/28.1 IP) in 20 relief outings with Iowa this season.
