The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples to Triple-A Iowa. Edwards will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their four-game series against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.

Edwards, 27, joins the Cubs for the second time this season. He was a member of Chicago’s Opening Day roster but was optioned to Iowa following the game on April 6 after allowing six earned runs with five walks in 1.2 innings covering four relief outings to start the year (0-1, 32.40 ERA). With Iowa, Edwards went 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA (2 ER/8.1 IP) in seven relief outings, striking out seven and walking only two batters in 8.1 innings while limiting foes to a .107 batting average. While in Triple-A, he spent seven days on the injured list due to a scraped right hand (April 17-24).

The righthander has spent all or part of the last four seasons in the majors with the Cubs, going 8-8 with two saves and a 3.36 ERA (60 ER/160.2 IP) in 160 relief outings, fanning 219 batters in 160.2 innings while limiting opponents to a .156 batting average. Edwards went 3-2 with a 2.60 ERA (15 ER/52.0 IP) in 58 relief outings last year.

Maples, 26, has posted no record with three scoreless appearances (2.2 IP, 5 BB, 6 SO) this year. He is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (3 ER/8.0 IP) in seven relief outings with Iowa this season.
