May 20th, 2019

BOSTON, MA – Prior to today’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves:

• Left-handed pitcher David Price was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
• Catcher Sandy León was reinstated from the paternity leave list.
• Catcher Oscar Hernández and right-handed pitcher Josh Smith were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following yesterday’s game against the Houston Astros.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Price, 33, will start today’s game in Toronto, his first outing since May 2 against the Chicago White Sox. The left-hander has gone 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA (15 ER/36.0 IP) in six starts for the Red Sox this season. He has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last four outings, posting a 2.63 ERA (7 ER/24.0 IP) in that time. In 305 career regular season appearances (295 starts), the left-hander is 144-77 (.652) with a 3.26 ERA (710 ER/1,958.1 IP) and 1,895 strikeouts. Price signed with Boston as a free agent in December 2015 and has since pitched in 96 games (88 starts) including the Postseason, going 43-23 (.652) with a 3.75 ERA (230 ER/552.2 IP).

León, 30, has played in 12 games for Boston this season, with the Red Sox going 7-3 in his 10 starts. He began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket but was selected to the major league roster on April 16 and has remained with the big league club since. The switch hitter has played 339 major league games over eight seasons between Washington (2012-14) and Boston (2015-19). Since being acquired by the Red Sox in 2015, León’s 3.52 catcher’s ERA is the lowest in the American League among players with at least 100 starts at the position.

Smith, 31, appeared in four games for Boston after being selected to the 25-man roster on April 16, going 0-1 with a 4.94 ERA (4 ER/7.1 IP) and three scoreless outings. In his most recent appearance on May 18 vs. Houston, the right-hander struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning. He has made three starts for Triple-A Pawtucket this season, going 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA (7 ER/16.2 IP). In 71 career appearances (10 starts) for Cincinnati (2015-16), Oakland (2017), and Boston (2019), Smith is 5-9 with a 5.28 ERA (79 ER/134.2 IP).

Hernández, 25, did not appear in a game for Boston after being selected to the 25-man roster on May 17. He has played in 16 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket this season, making 15 starts at catcher and appearing in one game at first base. Hernández has thrown out 169 of 413 attempted base stealers (40.9%) during his minor league career, including seven out of 18 (38.9%) this season. He has attended spring training as a non-roster invitee with Boston in each of the last two years, having signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January 2018.
