Pedroia to injured list with left knee irritation

April 19th, 2019

The Boston Red Sox will place second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day injured list with left knee irritation, effective today. To fill Pedroia’s spot on the active 25-man roster, the club will recall right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden from Triple-A Pawtucket prior to tomorrow’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Pedroia, 35, began the season on the injured list with left knee inflammation. After being returned from an injury rehab assignment with Single-A Greenville and reinstated from the injured list on April 9, he appeared in six games with Boston. He made four starts at second base and two as a designated hitter, going 2-for-20 (.100) with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. A three-time World Series champion, Pedroia is in his 14thmajor league season with the Red Sox, the majors’ fifth-longest continuous tenure for any player with their current team.

Walden, 30, began the season with Pawtucket but was recalled by the big league club on April 6. In five appearances with Boston this season, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA (3 ER/8.0 IP) and a .167 opponent batting average (5-for-30), with three of his appearances being 2.0 innings. Walden earned his first major league win in his season debut in the club’s 1-0 victory on April 7 at Arizona, adding a second win on April 11 versus Toronto. In 13 career major league appearances, all with Boston, Walden is 2-0 with one save and a 3.57 ERA (9 ER/22.2 IP).
