Indians acquire UTL Andrew Velazquez from the Tampa Bay Rays

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the following transactions relative to the 2019 Major League roster:

Acquired UTL ANDREW VELAZQUEZ from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange international bonus pool allotments.  Assigned to the AAA Columbus Injured List.

Designated RHP CHIH-WEI HU for assignment.

Velazquez, who turns 25 on July 14, has split the season between AAA Durham and Tampa Bay, batting .271 (35-for-129) at Durham with 9 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR and 16 RBI in 34 games. The switch-hitter was with the Rays, May 6-29, appearing in 10 games. He is currently on the Triple-A Injured List, playing four games since June 4 due to left thumb and right hamstring injuries. 

The super utility player has appeared in 418 games at shortstop, 90 games at second base, 78 games in center field and 33 games at third base over his Minor League career. He began his professional career in 2012 after being selected in the seventh round of the First-Year Player Draft by Arizona out of Fordham Prep High School (NYC) and was traded to the Rays in November 2014 in exchange for RHP Jeremy Hellickson. He has appeared in 23 Major League contests with Tampa Bay after debuting last September and has two Minor League options remaining.
