Mariners Reinstate INF Dee Gordon From 10-Day Injured List

Right-handed pitcher Matt Festa optioned to AAA Tacoma.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Dee Gordon, INF, returned from rehabilitation assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from 10-day IL.
  • Matt Festa, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Gordon (#9) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s game (5:10 pm PT) game vs. the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Gordon, 31, was originally placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right wrist contusion on May 21. He was hit on his right wrist by a pitch on May 9 at New York-AL and missed the next 3 games. He began a rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 7, where he went 3-for-14 (.214) in 3 games with the Rainiers. Prior to being placed on the IL, he was batting .281 (45x160) with 16 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 19 RBI, 1 HBP, 7 walks and 12 stolen bases in 45 games with the Mariners this season.

Gordon is in his 2nd season with the Mariners after being acquired from Miami in a trade on Dec. 7, 2017. He was originally selected by Los Angeles-NL in the 4th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. In parts of 9 Major League seasons with the Dodgers (2011-14), Marlins (2015-17) and Mariners (2018-c), he is batting .289 (1022x3539) with 500 runs, 114 doubles, 49 triples, 18 home runs, 216 RBI and 320 stolen bases. He is 1 of 3 active players with at least 300 career stolen bases.

** Festa**, 26, has appeared in 9 games over 3 stints (Opening Day – April 11, May 17 and June 3-10) with the Mariners this season, posting an 0-1 record with a 5.73 ERA (7 ER, 11.0 IP) while striking out 9 and walking 7. He was last recalled on June 3 and made 2 relief appearances (June 4 & 6). He was tagged with the loss in the Mariners 14-inning defeat vs. Houston on June 6, allowing 1 run on 1 hit. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander was recalled from AAA Tacoma prior to the game on May 17 and struck out 2 over 2.0 innings pitched that night vs. Minnesota. He was optioned back to the Rainiers following the game on May 17.

In 12 outings with the Rainiers this season, is 0-1 with 2 saves and a 4.40 ERA (7 ER, 14.1 IP) with 19 strikeouts and 6 walks. Over his last 7 games with Tacoma, he has not allowed a run while recording 2 saves, striking out 10, walking 4 and limiting opponents to a .080 (2x25) average against.

Festa had four separate stints with the Mariners in 2018, combining for a 2.16 ERA (2 ER, 8.1 IP) in 8 games, 1 start, while holding opponents scoreless in 6 of 8 appearances. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on July 14, 2018 at Colorado. He spent most of the 2018 campaign with Double-A Arkansas, where he led the Texas League with 20 saves. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the 7th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of East Stroudsburg University.
