Max Scherzer named National League Player of the Week

July 1st, 2019

Following a week in which he went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA (2 ER/16.0 IP) in two starts, Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer was named National League Player of the Week on Monday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.

Scherzer struck out 24 batters without issuing a walk across the two starts. Opposing batters hit .161 (9-for-56) with three extra-base hits (2 2B, HR) against him during the week.

On June 25 at Miami, Scherzer allowed one earned run on five hits with 10 strikeouts in Washington’s 6-1 win at the Marlins. The lone free pass he issued this week came in this start when he hit Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas with a pitch in the bottom of the third inning.

Scherzer capped his week with a 14-strikeout performance against his former club, the Detroit Tigers, on June 30 at Comerica Park. He allowed one earned run – a solo home run – on four hits in Washington’s 2-1 win. Scherzer finished his outing by striking out the side in the eighth inning.

This is the fifth weekly honor of Scherzer’s career. He was last named National League Player of the Week on April 15th, 2018.

This award marks the third award taken home by a Nationals player so far in 2019:
