September 14th, 2020

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with free agent infielder Jake Lamb and placed right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas on the paternity list, the club announced today. The A’s also added right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian as the 29th man for the doubleheader today at Seattle. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Lamb, the A’s transferred left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk to the 45-day injured list.

Lamb was batting .116 with one RBI in 18 games with Arizona before he was designated for assignment on Thursday. He started 11 games at first base, three at designated hitter and one at third base with the Diamondbacks but has made 482 of his 518 career starts at third base. Injuries limited Lamb to just 134 games over the previous two seasons but he was a National League All-Star in 2017 when he had career highs in home runs (30) and RBI (105). The 29-year-old right-handed hitter batted .239 with 81 home runs and 303 RBI in 596 games in seven seasons with Arizona. The Seattle native attended the University of Washington and was selected by the Diamondbacks in the sixth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Kaprielian joins the A’s for fourth time this year. Did not pitch during his first stint from Aug. 4 to 5, made his Major League debut on Aug. 16 against San Francisco (2.0 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 1 er, 1 bb, 1 so) during his second stay from Aug. 16 to 18 and did not pitch when he was added as the 29th man for the Sept. 8 doubleheader against Houston.

Montas started and lost yesterday at Texas and is 3-4 with a 5.86 ERA in nine starts. He went 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA and .175 opponents batting average over his first four starts but is 1-3 with a 10.80 ERA and .356 opponents batting average in five starts since then.

Puk began the season on the 10-day injured list with a strained left shoulder and is scheduled to undergo surgery.
