A’s select LHP A.J. Puk from Triple-A Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s selected left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Puk was the A’s first round pick and the sixth selection overall in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. He was rated as the A’s number one prospect by Baseball America following the 2017 season but then missed the entire 2018 campaign after undergoing ulnar collateral ligament surgery on April 10, 2018. The 24-year-old left-hander began his comeback at Single-A Stockton on June 11 and made three starts with the Ports, six appearances with Double-A Midland from June 28 to July 19 and nine relief appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas beginning July 23. Puk combined to go 4-1 with a 4.97 ERA and .226 opponents batting average in 18 games, including four starts, with all three clubs. He struck out 38 in 25.1 innings and tossed two innings or fewer in all 18 appearances. Puk is 10-15 with a 3.98 ERA and 262 strikeouts in 183.0 innings in 55 games, including 38 starts, in three seasons in the minors.
