D-backs select Daulton Varsho from alternate training site; option Kevin Cron to alternate training site

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks selected C/OF Daulton Varsho (@DaultonVarsho25) from the Alternate Training Site and optioned INF Kevin Cron to the Alternate Training Site.

Varsho, 24, entered the season ranked as the D-backs’ No. 1 prospect (53rd overall) by _Baseball America _and No. 3 by MLB.com (76th overall). He will wear No. 12 in his Major League debut.

In 2019, Varsho earned D-backs Minor League Player of the Year honors after hitting .301 (119-for-396)/.378 OBP/.520 SLG with 25 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs, 58 RBI, 42 walks, 21 stolen bases and 85 runs scored in 108 games for the Double-A Jackson in 2019. He was named a Southern League mid- and postseason All-Star, a Baseball America Minor League All-Star and Double-A All-Star and participated in the 2019 All-Star Futures Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland. 

Varsho ranked among SL leaders in 2019 in runs (1st), slugging pct. (1st), OPS (1st, .899), average (3rd), on-base pct. (4th), home runs (T-5th), hits (T-6th), doubles (T-6th) and stolen bases (T-9th). 

The 5-foot-10, 205-pound left-handed hitter was selected by the D-backs in the Competitive Balance B round (68th overall) in the 2017 draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

His father, Gary, played 8 Major League seasons (1988-95) with the Cubs, Pirates, Reds and Phillies. Daulton is named after the late Darren Daulton, a teammate of his father with the Phillies in 1995. 

Cron, 27, appeared in 2 games with Arizona this season, going 0-for-4 with a walk.
