OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland A’s right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for September. This is his first Pitcher of the Month award and Oakland’s first since Sean Manaea and Lou Trivino were named AL Pitcher and Reliever of the Month for June.
In September, Montas went 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA, 40 strikeouts, 15 walks, and a .193 opponents batting average in six starts spanning 37.0 innings pitched. Among AL pitchers in September, he ranks first in ERA, second in innings pitched, third in opponents batting average, and fifth in strikeouts and opponents OPS (.622).
For the season, Montas went 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA and a career-high 207 strikeouts. The strikeouts are second most in a season by an Oakland pitcher, behind only Vida Blue who struck out 301 in 1971. He finishes the season ranked fourth among AL pitchers in strikeouts, fifth in ERA, and third in innings pitched.
