Mariners acquire infielder Daniel Castro from Los Angeles-NL

Mariners send Kristopher Negrón to the Dodgers

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired minor league infielder Daniel Castro from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for infielder/outfielder Kristopher Negrón.

Castro will report to AAA Tacoma.

Seattle’s 40-man roster is now at 39.

Castro, 26, has spent the 2019 season with AAA Oklahoma City, batting .241 (40x166) with 17 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 home run, 11 RBI, 13 walks, and 15 stolen bases in 45 games. He was placed on the 7-day injured list on May 30 (retroactive to May 29) and was sent on a rehab assignment on July 23 with AZL Dodgers 1 and AZL Dodgers 2 in the Arizona Rookie League. He appeared in 4 games over the course of his rehab assignment, batting .400 (4x10) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple and 1 RBI. He will report to AAA Tacoma with Seattle.

Castro was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as an amateur free agent on August 10, 2009. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on June 17, 2015, appearing as a pinch hitter and recording a single in his only at bat. He was granted free agency on November 7, 2016 and signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies on November 21, 2016. After spending 2 seasons in the Rockies organization, he signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers on November 20, 2018. In total, he has appeared in parts of 3 Major League seasons with Atlanta (2015-16) and Colorado (2018), batting .210 (57x272) with 24 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 18 RBI, 1 stolen base and 11 walks in 98 career games.

Negrón, 33, was selected from AAA Tacoma on July 16, and appeared in 10 games for the Mariners this season, batting .217 (5x23) with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, and 2 walks. He spent the majority of the 2019 season with AAA Tacoma after being outrighted off Seattle’s 40-man roster on March 13. In 82 games with the Rainiers, he hit .310 (95x306) with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 12 home runs and 61 RBI with a .396 on-base percentage and a .503 slugging mark (.899 OPS). In his last 10 games, he posted a .375 mark (15x40) with 10 runs scored, a home run and 6 RBI.

Negrón appeared in 18 games with Seattle last September after being acquired by the Mariners from Arizona in exchange for cash considerations on Aug. 30, 2018. He appeared in 2 games last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was 1-for-3 with an RBI. He spent most of 2018 with AAA Reno, appearing in 118 games and batting .283 (105x371) with 17 doubles, 5 triples, 15 home runs and 45 RBI.

Negrón has appeared in parts of 6 Major League seasons with Cincinnati (2012, 2014-15), Arizona (2017-18) and Seattle (2018-19), combining to appear in 140 games with a .215 (69x321) average with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs and 25 RBI. He has appeared in the Majors at every position except pitcher and catcher, making starts at the other 7 positions on the field. In his career he’s appeared at: first base (4 games, 3 starts); second base (26 games, 18 starts); third base (32 games, 27 starts); shortstop (19 games, 11 starts); left field (24 games, 9 starts); center field (7 games, 3 starts) and right field (10 games, 7 starts).
