Mariners add 5 players as rosters expand

Mariners reinstate Austin Adams, Dan Altavilla, Braden Bishop and Brandon Brennan from the 10-Day IL; Mariners recall INF/OF Ryan Court from AAA Tacoma.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Austin Adams, RHP, returned from rehab assignment at AA Arkansas and reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
  • Dan Altavilla, RHP, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
  • Braden Bishop, OF, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
  • Brandon Brennan, RHP, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
  • Ryan Court, INF/OF, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners active roster is at 30 players. Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains at 38 players.

Adams (#63), Altavilla (#53), Bishop (#5), Brennan (#65) and Court (#12) will be in uniform and available for today’s (12:05 pm PT) game vs. the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Adams, 28, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on July 6 with a right shoulder strain and has missed 45 games since then. He was placed on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 22. He made 4 relief appearances during his rehab stint with the Rainiers, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while striking out 8 and walking 2. His rehab assignment was transferred to Double-A Arkansas on Aug. 26, where he made 2 appearances for the Travelers and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking 2. In 21 appearances (2 starts) with the Mariners this season, he is 1-1 with 9 holds and a 3.47 ERA (9 ER, 23.1 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 11 walks. In 19 relief appearances with the Mariners, the 6-for-3, 210-pound right-hander has posted a 2.49 ERA (6 ER, 21.2 IP) while striking out 39 and walking 9.

Adams began the 2019 season with Triple-A Fresno, appearing in 8 games in relief. He appeared in 1 game in relief with the Nationals on April 20 at Miami (1.0 IP, 1 ER) during a brief 3-game Major League stint, April 19-22. He was designated for assignment by the Nationals on April 30. He was acquired by Seattle from Washington and subsequently optioned to Tacoma on May 4. He appeared in 2 games in relief with the Rainiers, allowing 1 hit and striking out 4 over 2.1 scoreless innings before he was recalled on May 13.

Adams was originally selected by Los Angeles-AL in the 8th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Florida. He was acquired by the Nationals from the Angels for Danny Espinosa (inf) on Dec. 10, 2016. Adams made his Major League debut with the Nationals on July 15, 2017 at Cincinnati and in parts of 3 Major League seasons with Washington (2017-19) and Seattle (2019-c), is 1-1 with a 3.56 ERA (12 ER, 30.1 IP) in 30 games (2 starts).

Altavilla, 26, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on July 6 with a right forearm strain and has missed 45 games since then. He was placed on a rehab assignment with Short-A Everett on Aug. 11, where he struck out 2 in 1.0 scoreless inning vs. Hillsboro on the same day (8/11). His rehab assignment was transferred to Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 15. He made 6 relief appearances on his rehab assignment with the Rainiers, striking out 9 and walking 4 while allowing 5 earned runs in 6.0 innings. He recorded 4 scoreless outings (4.1 IP) during his rehab stint the Rainiers. He has appeared in 7 games over 3 stints with the Mariners this season (March 19-22, May 12 and June 21-July 5), posting a 9.53 ERA (6 ER, 5.2 IP) with 5 strikeouts and 8 walks. Prior to his IL stint, he spent the majority of the 2019 season in the Mariners minor league system, splitting time between AA Arkansas (14 G) and Tacoma (8 G). Overall, he is 5-1 with a 4.31 ERA (15 ER, 31.1 IP) with 14 walks and 52 strikeouts over 29 appearances in the minors this season.

Altavilla was originally selected by Seattle in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Mercyhurst College. In parts of 4 Major League seasons (2016-2019) with the Mariners, he is 4-3, 3.69 (35 ER, 85.1 IP) in 85 games, all in relief.

Bishop, 26, was placed on the 10-Day Injured list on June 15 with a lacerated spleen and has missed 73 games since then. He was placed on a rehab assignment with High-A Modesto on Aug. 14 and hit .240 (6x25) with 7 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 3 RBI and 2 walks in 7 games with the Nuts. On Aug. 23, his rehab assignment was transferred to Triple-A Tacoma, where he appeared in 5 games and went 3-for-21 (.143) with 5 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 2 RBI and 2 walks. He has appeared in 10 games over three stints with the Mariners this season (Opening Day - March 23, April 30-May 11 and June 2-5). In 10 games with the Mariners this season, he is 2-for-24 (.083) with 1 run and 2 RBI. He made his Major League debut on March 21 against Oakland in Tokyo. In 43 games with Tacoma this season, he batting .276 (51x185) with 29 runs, 15 doubles, 8 home runs, 31 RBI, 23 walks, 2 stolen bases, a .360 on-base percentage and a .486 slugging mark (.847 OPS).

Bishop was the Mariners 3rd round selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Washington. The Woodland, CA, native has appeared in parts of 5 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, batting .291 (485x1668) with 286 runs, 89 doubles, 7 triples, 24 home runs, 175 RBI, 163 walks and 50 stolen bases in 413 games.

Brennan, 28, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on August 15 (retroactive to 8/14) with right shoulder inflammation. He made 1 relief appearance on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma and allowed 1 hit in 1.0 scoreless inning while striking out 1 on Aug. 29 at Fresno. He was also on the 10-day IL, June 14 - Aug. 6, with a strained right shoulder and combined for 9 appearances (1 start) on rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners (1 GS) and Tacoma (8 G). In 33 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, he is 2-6 with a 5.50 ERA (22 ER, 36.0 IP) with 21 walks and 36 strikeouts. He made his MLB debut March 21 vs. Oakland in Tokyo, did not allow an earned run in his first 8 Major League games, and notched his first Big League win on April 11 at Kansas City.

Brennan was selected by Seattle in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 13, 2018. He was originally selected by Chicago-AL in the 4th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Brennan signed with Colorado as a minor league free agent on Nov. 13, 2018 but was selected by Seattle prior to joining the Rockies.

Court, 31, is appearing in his second stint with the Mariners this season (also: 7/26 – 8/10). He made his Major League debut on July 26 vs. Detroit and went on to hit .235 (4x18) with 1 run, 1 double, 1 home run, 5 RBI and 1 walk in 8 games with the Mariners earlier this season. In his first stint with Seattle, he appeared defensively at first base (5 G, 1 GS), left field (2 GS, 1 G) and right field (2 GS). On Aug. 10, he was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. He has spent most of the season with Tacoma, where he hit .258 (49x190) with 40 runs, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 11 home runs and 48 RBI in 54 games this season. He was released by the Cubs earlier this season on March 23. After appearing in 8 games with Sugar Land of the independent Atlantic League, he signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on May 6.

Court was originally selected by Arizona in the 23rd round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Illinois State University. In parts of 8 minor league seasons with Arizona (2011-14), Boston (2016-17), Chicago-NL (2018) and Seattle (2019-c), he is batting .273 (746x2728) with 417 runs scored, 172 doubles, 21 triples, 69 home runs, 393 RBI, 41 stolen bases and 365 walks in 787 career games. Court spent the 2015 season with the Sioux City Explorers of the independent American Association.
