August 15th, 2019

The Phillies have claimed right-hander Jared Hughes off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds, the club announced today.

Hughes, 34, was 3-4 with one save and a 4.10 ERA in 47 games for the Reds this year, including a 1.93 ERA in 26 road games. In 10 appearances against National League East opponents this season, Hughes has posted a 1.88 ERA while holding hitters to a .188 batting average. He has pitched at least 2.0 innings in eight games this season and has a 1.00 ERA in those appearances.

Having spent his entire career in the National League, Hughes has a career record of 27-23 with 12 saves and a 2.83 ERA in 499 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2011-16), Milwaukee Brewers (2017) and Reds (2018-19). Over the last eight seasons (2012-19), Hughes has appeared in the third-most games (487) among NL relievers, trailing only Tony Watson (553) and Kenley Jansen (512).

To make room for Hughes on the 40-man roster, right-hander Edubray Ramos has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
