TORONTO -- The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez on the 10-day injured list with a right posterior elbow impingement. To take his place on the active roster, the team has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher David Carpenter (#49) from Triple-A Nashville.

Chavez has been on the Rangers’ active roster all season, posting a 3-5 record with a 4.85 ERA (42 ER/78.0 IP) over 48 games/9 starts. He ranks among team leaders in relief innings (T1st, 48.0) and appearances (2nd, 48) after pitching the sixth inning of Monday’s loss in Toronto. The first date that Chavez will be eligible to return is August 23. This marks just the second career stint on the injured list for Chavez, the other coming in 2015, when he ended the campaign on the Oakland injured list with a fractured rib.

Carpenter, 34, will be with the Rangers for a second time this season, as he made one relief appearance during his first stint with the club from May 31-June 7. His outing on June 4 vs. Baltimore (0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R-ER) marked his first Major League appearance since he was with the Nationals on July 5, 2015 vs. San Francisco. He was designated for assignment prior to the Rangers’ doubleheader on June 8, and assigned outright to Nashville on June 10.

Carpenter has spent the balance of the season with the Sounds, posting a 2-0 record with 19 saves, a 1.82 ERA (7 ER/34.2 IP), 1.154 WHIP figure, and 9.9 strikeouts per 9 innings over 35 relief appearances. He leads the Pacific Coast League in saves and has compiled a 0.77 ERA (1 ER/11.2 IP) over his last 12 outings, with his most recent appearance on August 8 at Fresno (W, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R-ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 23 pitches/14 strikes).

Signed by Texas to a minor league contract on February 5, Carpenter did not appear in a Cactus League game with the Rangers this spring. He owns a career 11-11 record with 4 saves and a 3.74 ERA over 219 relief appearances in the Major Leagues with Houston (2011-12), Toronto (2012), Atlanta (2013-14), New York-AL (2015), Washington (2015), and Texas (2019). Carpenter made 3 appearances/one start for the Blue Jays in 2012 before he was traded to Boston in the offseason as part of the agreement allowing manager John Farrell to leave and manage the Red Sox.

Following these transactions, the Rangers are now at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster.
