Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA -- Prior to today’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves:

• Left-handed pitcher David Price was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

• Right-handed pitcher Jhoulys Chacín, catcher Juan Centeno and outfielder Gorkys Hernández were selected to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. Chacín will wear number 43, Centeno will wear 68, and Hernández will wear 47.

• Right-handed pitchers Travis Lakins, Hector Velázquez, and Ryan Weber were recalled from Pawtucket.

• To make room for Chacín, Centeno and Hernández on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred left-handed pitcher Chris Sale and right-handed pitcher Steven Wright to the 60-day injured list, and first baseman Joey Curletta was outrighted off the 40-man roster and remains with Double-A Portland.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Price, 33, will start today’s game against the Angels, his first start since being placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 8 (retroactive to Aug. 5) with a left wrist injury. The left-hander has made 21 starts for Boston this season, going 7-5 with a 4.36 ERA (51 ER/105.1 IP). He is one of four active American League pitchers with at least 150 wins, owning a 150-80 record and 3.31 ERA (746 ER/2,027.2 IP) in 320 career appearances (310 starts) with the Rays (2008-14), Tigers (2014-15), Blue Jays (2015) and Red Sox (2016-19).

Chacín, 31, was signed by Boston to a Minor League contract yesterday. He has made 19 starts for the Brewers this season, going 3-10 with a 5.79 ERA (57 ER/88.2 IP). Over a career-high 35 starts for Milwaukee in 2018, the right-hander went 15-8 with a 3.50 ERA (75 ER/192.2 IP) and set career highs in wins and strikeouts (156). He made his postseason debut last season and was 2-1 with a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP) for the Brewers, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings in Game 2 of the NLDS versus Colorado and 5.1 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the NLCS against Los Angeles. Chacín is 77-85 with a 4.00 ERA (579 ER/1,304.1 IP) in 249 career appearances (221 starts) for the Rockies (2009-14), Diamondbacks (2015), Braves (2016), Angels (2016), Padres (2017) and Brewers (2018-19).

Centeno, 29, was signed by Boston as a Minor League free agent in November 2018 and has played all 81 of his games for Pawtucket at catcher, throwing out 24 of 74 attempted base stealers (32.4%). In his first season in the Red Sox organization, the Puerto Rico native has hit .248 (66-for-266) with four home runs and 40 RBI. His last Major League experience was in 2018 with the Rangers, where he played in 10 games for the club from March to May. Centeno has seen action in 111 games during his six-season Major League career, playing for the Mets (2013-14), Brewers (2015), Twins (2016), Astros (2017) and Rangers (2018).

Hernández, 31, was signed by Boston as a Minor League free agent in December 2018 and has hit .219 (94-for-430) with 16 home runs and 53 RBI over 123 games for Pawtucket this season, primarily appearing defensively in center field (102 games). He leads the PawSox with 20 stolen bases, tied for the sixth-most in the International League. The right-handed hitter played 142 games for San Francisco in 2018, batting .234 (97-for-414) with 15 home runs and 40 RBI. Since making his Major League debut in 2012, Hernández has played for the Pirates (2012, ’15), Marlins (2012) and Giants (2016-18).

Lakins, 25, allowed one unearned run in 4.0 innings over two appearances for Boston during his last stint on the active Major League roster. In nine outings for the club during 2019, the first of his Major League career, the right-hander is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA (6 ER/13.1 IP). He has also made 40 appearances (one start) for Pawtucket this season, most recently allowing just one earned run in 5.0 innings over his last four outings. Selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2015 June Draft, Lakins is 17-13 with a 4.45 ERA (129 ER/260.2 IP) in 111 Minor League appearances (41 starts) in the organization.

Velázquez, 30, has made 26 appearances for Boston in 2019, going 1-4 with a 5.81 ERA (31 ER/48.0 IP). The right-hander has also made 13 Minor League appearances this season, including a start for Short-A Lowell on a rehabilitation assignment. In his 12 outings for Pawtucket, he has posted a 3.31 ERA (6 ER/16.1 IP). Velázquez made his Major League debut with Boston in 2017 after the club purchased his contract from Campeche of the Mexican League. In 81 career Major League appearances (19 starts), the right-hander is 11-7 with a 3.94 ERA (69 ER/157.2 IP).

Weber, 29, is 1-2 with a 4.35 ERA (15 ER/31.0 IP) over three stints with Boston this season. In three outings during his most recent Major League stint from Aug. 4-11, the right-hander allowed one run over 7.0 innings (1.29 ERA), including 4.0 scoreless frames on Aug. 4 at Yankee Stadium. He has also made 16 starts for Pawtucket in 2019, going 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA (39 ER/78.0 IP), including a 2.77 ERA (15 ER/48.2 IP) in his last nine starts with the club. Weber is 2-7 with a 4.82 ERA (56 ER/104.2 IP) in 35 career Major League appearances (11 starts) between the Braves (2015-16), Mariners (2017), Rays (2018) and Red Sox (2019).

Sale, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 17 with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to Aug. 14. In 25 starts this season, the left-hander is 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA (72 ER/147.1 IP) and career-best rate of 13.32 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. He has recorded at least 200 strikeouts in each of the last seven seasons, joining Max Scherzer as the only Major League pitchers to accomplish the feat. Acquired by the Red Sox in December 2016, Sale is 36-25 with a 3.21 ERA (194 ER/544.2 IP) and 0.99 WHIP in 91 games (88 starts) for the club, including the postseason.

Wright, 35, was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 14 with a right great toe contusion. In six games with the Red Sox this season, all in relief, the right-hander has posted an 8.53 ERA (6 ER/6.1 IP). He appeared in 20 games (four starts) for Boston in 2018 and posted a 2.68 ERA (16 ER/53.2 IP), recording a 24.2-inning scoreless streak from May 24 to June 16. Acquired from Cleveland on July 31, 2012, the 2016 American League All-Star is in his 13th professional season.

Curletta, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Mariners in May and has played 93 games for Double-A Portland this season. For the Sea Dogs, the left-handed batter has hit .205 (63-for-307) with nine home runs and 44 RBI while appearing defensively at first base in 69 games. Selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2012 June Draft, Curletta has played for the Dodgers (2012-16), Mariners (2017-19) and Red Sox (2019) organizations.
