Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Selected right-handed pitcher Jeurys Familia to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort to Worcester following last night’s game.
  • Transferred left-handed pitcher Chris Sale to the 60-Day Injured List.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Familia, 32, struck out all three batters faced in a scoreless relief inning for Worcester on Thursday, his lone appearance after signing with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on Tuesday. The right-hander made 38 appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, posting a 6.09 ERA (23 ER/34.0 IP). The Dominican Republic native is 33-26 with 125 saves and a 3.46 ERA (205 ER/532.2 IP) in 537 career outings (one start) for the New York Mets (2012-21), Oakland A’s (2018), and Phillies (2022).

Ort, 30, allowed one run in the ninth inning Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves. The right-hander surrendered eight runs over 0.2 innings on July 22 against the Toronto Blue Jays but has a 4.38 ERA (6 ER/12.1 IP) in his other 10 outings.

Sale, 33, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on July 22 with a left fifth finger fracture, retroactive to July 19, before suffering a right wrist fracture on August 6. The left-hander was 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA (2 ER/5.2 IP) in two starts this season for Boston.
