BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Robert Stock from the Alternate Training Site. To make room for Stock on the active roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs to the Alternate Training Site.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Stock, 30, was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 26. He made his major league debut in 2018 and posted a 2.50 ERA (11 ER/39.2 IP) in 32 appearances—all in relief—with San Diego. He made the Padres’ 2019 Opening Day roster but spent most of the season with Triple-A El Paso, where he averaged 13.35 strikeouts per nine innings in 27 outings. After beginning his professional career as a catcher, Stock converted to a pitcher prior to the 2012 season. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2009 June Draft.

Springs, 27, made the Red Sox’ Opening Day roster after being acquired from the Texas Rangers on January 15. He has made four relief appearances for Boston this season, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. He threw a perfect eighth inning at Tropicana Field on August 4 and recorded another scoreless inning on August 8 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He received the loss last night against the Rays after surrendering three runs in 1.1 innings.
