Right-handed pitcher Matt Magill reports to Mariners tonight

Right-handed pitcher Matt Festa optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game 7/21)

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Matt Magill, RHP, reports to club.
  • Matt Festa, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game 7/21).

Magill (#61) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm) game vs. the Texas Rangers at T-Mobile Park.

Magill, 29, was acquired by Seattle from Minnesota yesterday in exchange for cash considerations after being designated for assignment by the Twins on July 18. He was 2-0 with a 4.45 ERA (14 ER, 28.1 IP) with 36 strikeouts and 15 walks in 28 relief appearances with the Twins this season. In his first 14 outings of the season, spanning April 26-June 1, he posted a 1.35 ERA (2 ER, 13.1 IP with 18 strikeouts and 5 walks while going 1-0. He began the season on the 10-day Injured List with right shoulder tendinitis. After making 5 appearances (1 start) on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester, he was reinstated from the IL on April 26.

Magill made his Major League debut with Los Angeles-NL on April 27, 2013 vs. Milwaukee. He has appeared in parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Dodgers (2013), Reds (2016) and Twins (2018-19), posting a record of 5-5 with a 4.69 ERA (61 ER, 117.0 IP) with 119 strikeouts and 71 walks in 79 career appearances (6 starts). He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Royal (CA) High School.

Festa, 26, has made 20 relief appearances over 4 stints with the Mariners this season: Opening Day – April 11, May 17 June 3-10 and June 14 – July 21 (post-game). He is 0-2 with 3 holds and a 5.64 ERA (14 ER, 22.1 IP) while striking out 21 and walking 12. From June 14 – July 7, he posted a 2.45 ERA (2 ER, 7.1 IP) in 8 outings with the Mariners, but allowed a run in each of his last 3 games (6 R, 5 ER, 4.0 IP). In 13 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, he is 1-1 with 2 saves and a 3.86 ERA (7 ER, 16.1 IP) with 22 strikeouts and 6 walks.

Festa had 4 stints with the Mariners last season, combining for a 2.16 ERA (2 ER, 8.1 IP) in 8 games (1 start). He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on July 14, 2018 at Colorado. He spent most of the 2018 campaign with Double-A Arkansas, where he led the Texas League with 20 saves. He was selected by Seattle in the 7th round of the 2016 Draft.
