MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed outfielder/first baseman Alex Kirilloff on the 10-day Injured List with right wrist inflammation.
Kirilloff has hit .250 (36-for-144) with seven doubles, three home runs, 21 RBI, five walks and 14 runs scored in 45 games for the Twins this season. This marks his second stint on the Injured List in 2022, after missing time from April 13-May 6 with a similar injury.
To replace Kirilloff on the 26-man roster, the Twins have selected the contract of outfielder Jake Cave from Triple-A St. Paul. Cave has played in 84 games for the Saints this season, hitting .273 (88-for-322) with 20 doubles, seven triples, 14 home runs, 57 RBI, 63 runs scored, 43 walks, a .370 on-base percentage, a .509 slugging percentage and an .879 OPS. Cave posted a 49-game on-base streak from May 3-July 8, the third-longest such streak in the minors this season. Since May 18, he has hit .304 (68-for-224) with 14 home runs, a .603 slugging percentage and a .990 OPS in 56 games. The 29-year-old has played in parts of the last four seasons with the Twins, hitting .240 (182-for-758) with 36 doubles, seven triples, 28 home runs, 98 RBI and 113 runs scored in 281 games.
To make room for Cave on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated right-handed pitcher Jharel Cotton for release or assignment. Cotton has appeared in 25 games for Minnesota this season, going 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA (35.0 IP, 11 ER), 16 walks, 31 strikeouts, a .185 opponent batting average and a 1.11 WHIP.
Additionally, infielder Miguel Sanó has been transferred to the 60-day Injured List (left knee inflammation), making room on the 40-man roster for right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle, who was acquired via trade with the Cincinnati Reds today. Mahle will wear uniform number 51.
Lastly, right-handed pitcher Jorge López will be active for tonight’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Target Field and wear uniform number 48. He was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles via trade earlier today.
