Twins recall Josh Winder and select contract of Jharel Cotton from Triple-A St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Winder and select the contract of right-handed pitcher Jharel Cotton from Triple-A St. Paul.

Winder, 25, recently made two starts for the Saints, going 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA (8.0 IP, 2 ER), two walks and five strikeouts. He appeared in 10 games (6 starts) for the Twins earlier this season, going 4-3 with a 3.77 ERA (45.1 IP, 19 ER), 14 walks and 29 strikeouts. He is scheduled to make the start this afternoon against the Cleveland Guardians at Target Field.

Cotton, who will be making his fifth stint with the Twins this season, has gone 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (13.1 IP, 4 ER), one save, five walks, 21 strikeouts and a .156 opponent batting average in his last 12 appearances for the Saints. He appeared in 25 games for Minnesota earlier this season, going 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA (35.0 IP, 11 ER), 16 walks, 31 strikeouts, a .185 opponent batting average and a 1.11 WHIP.

To make room on the 28-man roster, the Twins have placed right-handed pitcher Chris Archer on the 15-day Injured List with right pectoral tightness and optioned right-handed pitcher Cole Sands to Triple-A St. Paul. Archer, who left last night’s start against the Guardians after experiencing the injury, started 25 games for the Twins this season, going 2-8 with a 4.56 ERA (102.2 IP, 52 ER), 48 walks and 84 strikeouts. Sands was reinstated from the 15-day Injured List (right elbow contusion) on Thursday and appeared in relief last night against Cleveland, allowing three runs on two hits in 3.1 innings pitched, with five walks and one strikeout.
