The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has received right-handed pitcher Jhan Mariñez (pronounced yahn ma-REEN-yez) from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a waiver claim.

Mariñez will join the Rangers on Friday, when the club will make a corresponding roster move to accommodate him on the 25-man roster.

Mariñez, who turns 29 on Saturday, has gone a combined 0-3 with a 3.91 ERA (22 ER/50.2 IP) over 39 relief appearances with Milwaukee and Pittsburgh in 2017 with 23 walks and 40 strikeouts. He began the season with the Brewers, making his first career Opening Day roster, posting a 0-2 record with a 5.40 ERA in 15 games before he was designated for assignment on May 15. Mariñez was sent to Pittsburgh in a May 19 waiver claim and joined the Pirates on May 20, going 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 24 outings prior to being designated for assignment again on August 5.

Mariñez has seen major league action for five different organizations over four seasons, appearing for Miami (2010), Chicago-AL (2012), Tampa Bay (2016), Milwaukee (2016-17), and Pittsburgh (2017). The Dominican Republic native originally signed with the Marlins in 2006 and was sent to the White Sox in the trade involving manager Ozzie Guillen on September 29, 2011.

With the addition of Mariñez, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club's major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day disabled list.
