Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – Prior to today’s game against the Texas Rangers, the Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves:

Right-handed pitchers Travis Lakins and Josh Smith were recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

To make room on the 25-man roster, left-handed pitcher Bobby Poyner was optioned to Pawtucket and left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez was optioned to Double-A Portland following last night’s game.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Lakins, 24, made his major league debut this season and has appeared in four games over two stints with the Red Sox, allowing five runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings (6.43 ERA). The right-hander has also pitched in 18 games for the PawSox, going 2-0 with two saves, a 3.32 ERA (7 ER/19.0 IP), and 18 strikeouts. Originally selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2015 June Draft, Lakins has allowed zero runs over 5.1 innings in his last six outings with Pawtucket, most recently throwing two pitches in one-third of an inning on June 9 against Rochester.

Smith, 31, has appeared in five games (two starts) with Boston this season, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA (8 ER/11.1 IP) and three scoreless relief outings. He most recently pitched Saturday against the Rays at Fenway Park, giving up four runs in 4.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts. The right-hander has also made six starts for Pawtucket this season, going 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA (18 ER/31.0 IP). In 72 career big league appearances (11 starts) for Cincinnati (2015-16), Oakland (2017), and Boston (2019), Smith is 5-10 with a 5.39 ERA (83 ER/138.2 IP).

Poyner, 26, has made three appearances for the Red Sox this season, allowing seven earned runs over 4.0 innings. The left-hander has surrendered zero runs in his last six outings for Pawtucket since May 25, throwing 8.1 innings in that time. Selected by Boston in the 14th round of the 2015 June Draft, Poyner made the Red Sox’ 2018 Opening Day roster and has appeared in 23 major league games, striking out 26 batters and walking seven with 15 runs allowed in 26.1 innings.

Hernandez, 22, made his major league debut this season and has appeared in two games over three stints with Boston. Ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 3 prospect and top pitching prospect, he started last night’s game against Texas and allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings, giving up three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. In 10 appearances (nine starts) for the Sea Dogs this season, Hernandez has posted a 5.13 ERA (23 ER/40.1 IP) and held opponents to a .217 batting average with 59 strikeouts and 32 walks.
