Red Sox Place Right-handed Pitcher Heath Hembree on 10-day Injured List

Club Recalls Left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor from Triple-A Pawtucket

June 14th, 2019

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow extensor strain, retroactive to June 11. To fill Hembree’s spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Hembree, 30, has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances. The right-hander has surrendered just 1 earned run (2 runs) in 17.1 innings over his last 20 outings (0.52 ERA), while holding opponents to a .119 batting average (7-for-59) during that time. He last appeared for Boston on Monday against Texas, retiring all four batters he faced with three strikeouts and stranding two inherited runs to end the ninth inning. In 235 major league relief appearances between San Francisco (2013) and Boston (2014-19), Hembree is 13-5 with a 3.35 ERA (91 ER/244.2 IP).

Taylor, 26, made five relief appearances for Boston after being recalled from Pawtucket on May 29. During the first major league stint of his career, the left-hander allowed six runs with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings (10.80 ERA). He most recently pitched for Boston in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader against Tampa Bay, in which he allowed four runs on six hits in 1.0 inning. Acquired by Boston from Arizona in May 2018, Taylor is 23-34 with a 4.38 ERA (216 ER/444.1 IP) in 155 minor league appearances (62 starts) within the Philadelphia (2014-15), Arizona (2015-18), and Boston (2018-19) organizations.
