Rockies draft eight collegiate players on draft's second day for third consecutive season

On the second day of Major League Baseball's 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected five right-handed pitchers, two outfielders and one infielder. For the third consecutive season, all eight of the Rockies' selections on the second day of the draft came from the college ranks.

Below is a pick-by-pick breakdown of the Rockies' Tuesday selections:

Right-handed pitcher Jacob Wallace, a junior at the University of Connecticut, was selected in the third round (100th overall) … a native of Methuen, Mass., he has gone 3-1 with 16 saves, a 0.64 ERA (42.0 IP, 3 ER), 10 walks and 68 strikeouts for the Huskies this season, and was named to the All-Regional team … the 6-foot-1, 190-pound closer struck out a season-high seven batters over 2.1 hitless innings pitched in Sunday's win over Oklahoma State in the NCAA Regionals (were eliminated Monday) … was the co-recipient of the Cape Cod Baseball John Claffey New England Top Prospect Award following the 2018 CCBL season, having made 12 scoreless appearances (13.2 IP) with 25 strikeouts and six saves.

In the fourth round, with the 129th overall pick, the Rockies selected right fielder Brenton Doyle out of Shepherd University (West Virginia) … the 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior from Warrenton, Va., batted .392 (73-for-186) with 79 runs, 17 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 42 walks, 19 stolen bases and 22 strikeouts for the Rams this past season and was named the Mountain Conference Player of the Year as well as first team All-MEC … it was his second consecutive Player of the Year honor after batting .415 (98-for-236) with 64 runs,17 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs, 68 RBI, 10 walks and 34 strikeouts.

With their fifth-round pick, the Rockies selected junior right-handed pitcher Will Ethridge out of the University of Mississippi with the 159th overall pick … the Lilburn, Ga., native went 7-6 across 15 starts with 22 walks and 71 strikeouts while allowing just two home runs … was originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 35th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, after going 23-5 with a 1.64 ERA (148.0 IP, 27 ER) as a high schooler … was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball following the 2017 season, a year in which he struck out 10 batters in each of his first two starts to begin his collegiate career, becoming the first Ole Miss pitcher to ever strike out 10 in his debut.

Right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell of St. John's University (New York) was selected by the Rockies in the sixth round with the 189th overall pick … a 6-foot-7, 215-pound junior, Hollowell went 3-2 with nine saves, a 4.23 ERA (38.1 IP, 18 ER), 15 walks and 48 strikeouts in his junior season for the Red Storm en route to being named to the All-BIG EAST First Team … the highest selection out of St. John's since 2016, he is the sixth St. John's player to be selected by the Rockies within the last decade, the first since Matt Carasiti in 2012 … the Skillman, N.J., native pitched for Hyannis in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2018, going 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA (19.2 IP, 11 ER), nine walks and 18 strikeouts across four starts (has never started in his collegiate career) and two relief appearances.

The Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Jared Horn in the seventh round with the 219th overall pick … Horn, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound junior at the University of California, Berkeley, went 6-1 with a 1.82 ERA (69.1 IP, 14 ER) with 18 walks and 56 strikeouts in 11 starts for the Golden Bears in 2019 … missed the first month of the season following an appendectomy … pitched his first complete game against Arizona State his last time out on May 19, and pitched eight or more innings in five of his final seven starts … a native of Napa, Calif., he was named PAC-12 Pitcher of the Week two times in 2019, first after pitching 8.1 innings against UCLA on April 19 while allowing one unearned run with 10 strikeouts and then after a seven-inning scoreless appearance in which he allowed three hits against Stanford on May 11.

With their eighth-round selection (249th overall), the Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Jacob Kostyshock out of the University of Arkansas … the 6-foot-4, 175-pound native of O'Fallon, Mo., has gone 1-3 with a 2.89 ERA (28.0 IP, 9 ER), 10 walks and 29 strikeouts across 20 appearances with one start for the Razorbacks in 2019 … he and his Arkansas teammates will face Ole Miss in the Fayetteville Super Regional this coming weekend.

In the ninth round, the Rockies selected second baseman Isaac Collins, a junior out of Creighton University (Nebraska) … batted .293 (71-for-242) with 49 runs, 13 doubles, seven triples, six home runs, 34 RBI, 13 stolen bases, 27 walks and 42 strikeouts for the Bluejays, who were eliminated by Michigan in the NCAA Regionals yesterday … the native of Maple Grove, Minn., batted .320 across 44 games for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League over the summer of 2018 … in high school, became the first player since Joe Mauer to be named a finalist for the Mr. Minnesota Award in both baseball and football.

Completing their second day of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Rockies selected center fielder Jack Yalowitz out of the University of Illinois in the 10th round with the 309th overall pick … a senior, Yalowitz batted .295 (62-for-210) with 33 runs, 15 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 23 walks, 11 stolen bases and 34 strikeouts in 56 games for the Fighting Illini, who fell in the NCAA Regionals vs. Jacksonville State on Saturday … the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Chicago, Ill., native was named an All-Big Ten third team outfielder this past season, as well as the Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of March 11 (his first career selection) after batting .583 with two home runs and six RBI that week.

The draft will conclude Wednesday with rounds 11 through 40.
