Texas Rangers to commemorate Jackie Robinson Day on Monday, April 15

On-field personnel from Rangers and Angels to wear number 42; Special pre-game activities planned

April 12th, 2019

As has been tradition each April 15 since 2004, the Texas Rangers will join Major League Baseball and all 30 clubs to commemorate Jackie Robinson Day on Monday at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

The Rangers host the Los Angeles Angels at 7:05 p.m., and special ceremonies will take place before the game. April 15, 2019 marks the 72nd anniversary of Robinson’s historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. For 2019, there is an added special element of the on-field tributes for the centennial celebration of Robinson’s birth. Major League Baseball is commemorating this centennial anniversary throughout 2019 with the League and Clubs complementing efforts led by the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Once again in 2019, all players, managers, coaches, umpires and other on-field personnel will wear Robinson’s iconic Number ‘42’ to honor the anniversary of Robinson’s historic debut and to continue the unified, League-wide recognition of Jackie Robinson Day. Since 2004, every April 15 has been designated Jackie Robinson Day throughout Major League Baseball to honor the enduring impact of Jackie Robinson’s legacy on Baseball and American society.

Additionally, a commemorative sleeve patch will be added to uniforms this year with a matching insignia on all on-field New Era caps. Players, managers and coaches will also have the option to wear a “Jackie Robinson 100” t-shirt during batting practice as well as Stance socks with an emblazoned “42” logo. The Jackie Robinson Day logo will be included on base jewels and official dugout lineup cards.

Om Monday, the Rangers will recognize alumni of the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars program who will be attendance. That will be followed by an on-field recognition of Minority & Women Business Enterprises (MWBE) and advocacy agencies who are working on the construction of the new Globe Life Field by the City of Arlington and the Rangers.

Twenty-five athletes from the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at Mercy Street Sports Complex presented by Toyota in West Dallas will wear #42 jerseys and will line up with the Rangers players and coaches during the playing of the National Anthem. The Youth Academy athletes will also participate in the first pitch ceremony. Proceeds from Monday’s Texas 2 Split Raffle will go to the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

In addition, the Rangers MLB Youth Academy will host activities on Thursday, April 18, to honor the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson. Academy participants and just keep livin’ students from L.G. Pinkston High School are being invited to attend a screening of the movie The Other Boys of Summer, which explores civil rights in America through the lives of the Negro League baseball players and is narrated by award-winning actress Cicely Tyson.

That screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the legacy of Jackie Robinson throughout baseball and American society featuring Rangers outfielder Delino DeShields, former Rangers pitcher Darren Oliver, and the movie’s producer Lauren Meyer with Rangers Director Youth Academy & Youth Baseball/Softball Programs Juan Leonel Garciga serving as moderator.

This marks the 11th consecutive year that all on-field personnel are wearing #42 on April 15, and the Rangers are 6-4 all-time on those occasions, 2-2 at home.

Tickets for the Angels series, which also includes 7:05 p.m. games on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16-17, and all 2019 Texas Rangers home games can be purchased at texasrangers.com, by calling 972.RANGERS, and at the Globe Life Park in Arlington ticket office.
