White Sox Announce Three Roster Moves

May 25th, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS – Prior to this afternoon’s game at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox reinstated left-handed pitcher Manny Bañuelos from the 10-day injured list, placed catcher Welington Castillo on the seven-day concussion list and recalled catcher Seby Zavala from Class AAA Charlotte.

Bañuelos, 28, is scheduled to start today’s game at Target Field. He left his last start on May 14 vs. Cleveland in the fifth inning with left shoulder soreness. Bañuelos is 2-3 with a 7.26 ERA (25 ER/31.0 IP) and 32 strikeouts in nine appearances (five starts) this season, his first with the White Sox.

Zavala, 25, is batting .218 (19-87) with seven doubles, six home runs, 18 RBI and a .560 slugging percentage over 21 games with Charlotte this season. He has appeared in 15 games at catcher, throwing out 25.0 percent (5-20) of attempted basestealers and two at first base. Zavala currently is ranked by MLB.com as the No. 22 prospect in the White Sox organization.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Zavala was named a Southern League All-Star with Class AA Birmingham in 2018, and was named the White Sox co-Player of the Month for April in 2018. A Fort Hood, Texas native, Zavala is a career .267 hitter (359-1,344) with 86 doubles, eight triples, 51 home runs, 225 RBI and 124 walks in 360 games over five seasons (2015-19) in the Chicago system. He originally was selected in the 12th round of the June 2015 draft out of San Diego State University, where he played for Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn.

Zavala has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 59.

Castillo, 32, left last night’s game in the eighth inning after taking a second foul tip off his mask. He is hitting .176 (15-85) with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI in 26 games this season.
