The School District of Philadelphia Rings in the New School Year with the Phillies

On August 28, 2023, the School District of Philadelphia held a special back-to-school event at the Yard at Citizens Bank Park, as part of the district’s annual Ring the Bell PHL campaign.

School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Tony B. Waltington, Sr., Ed.D., Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Philadelphia Board of Education member Sarah-Ashley Andrews joined Phillies ambassador Scott Palmer, 1993 National League champion Mickey Morandini, and the Phillies Ballgirls to guide students into the new year. Also, Dr. Waltington and students Yohan Channer and Jose Santiago celebrated students from the Office of School Safety’s Police Athletic League of Philadelphia.

District students from The Lighthouse, which provides terrific programs and activities to Philadelphia families, were welcomed back to school with a video message from Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. They also enjoyed a special appearance from the Phillie Phanatic, who caught the ceremonial first pitch of the school year and led the students in running the bases.

At the end of the event, the School District of Philadelphia, the students and the Phillies all “rang the bell” together to celebrate schools being back in session on September 5!
