21 years ago today, a Minor League ballgame ended in a double no-hitter

The double no-hitter is almost unheard of in professional baseball. Almost.

On Aug. 22, 1992, the Clearwater Phillies beat the Winter Haven Red Sox, 1-0, without either team recording a hit. Andy Carter pitched for Clearwater, Scott Bakkum for Winter Haven. The evening's only run was scored on two walks and two sacrifice bunts in the seventh inning. This was the first professional game since 1952 to conclude without a hit -- a feat that still has yet to be repeated.

There's never been a double no-hitter in the Major Leagues, though the Reds and Cubs came awfully close. Their fateful bout on May 2, 1917, lasting only one hour and fifty minutes, saw Cincinnati's Fred Toney and Chicago's James "Hippo" Vaughn remain hitless through nine innings. The Reds' game-winning run was driven in by the legendary Jim Thorpe in the 10th.
